Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 24 Jul 1928
JAMES QUIRK Mr. James Quirk, late of Wagragobilly, Gundagai, passed away peacefully in his sleep last Sunday week, at the residence of his son Michael, of 15 Kent-street, Waverley, with whom he has made his home for a number of years since leaving the Gundagai district, in 1918. The deceased gentleman had been in failing health for years, so his death was not an unexpected one. Mr. Quirk was born at Darbalara on June 22, 1842. His parents being newcomers from Ireland, and his father was in the employ of Mr. Leopold Fane, the de Salis, then owner of "Darbalara Station," hence the late gentleman can be considered one of the pioneers of the district. In June, 1852, Mr. Quirk was one of those rescued from the big flood which, during that year, proved so disastrous to the Murrumbidgee settlers. His father had a boat, and rescued about fifty neighbors. His father afterwards selected land and settled on the Adjungbilly Creek, where he reared his family. In 1863 Mr. Quirk selected land for himself at "Oakville," Wagragobilly. In April, 1871, at Tumut, he married a young Irish girl, named Mary Howe, and they resided at "Oakville" where their family was born and reared. Their children are Michael Quirk (Sydney), Mrs. Underwood (Sydney) and James Quirk. Their son, John, died during childhood. Mr. and Mrs. Quirk left ''Oakville" and went to reside in Sydney 10 years ago. Mrs. Quirk predeceased her husband in 1920. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning, when deceased's remains were laid to rest beside his wife at Waverley Cemetery. Rev. Father Greasley, and an assistant from Waverley, read the burial service. The chief mourners at the graveside were Mr. Michael Quirk (son) and Mrs. Underwood (daughter), Vincent Quirk (grandson) and Irene Quirk (grand-daughter). There were also quite a number of old neighbors present, amongst whom were Mr. P. Mulqueeney, Mr. and Mrs. T. Mulqueeney, Mr. M. Burke, Mrs Thompson, Mrs. Fred Hargreaves and Mrs. Batty. Mr. Michael Quirk, of Wagra, is a brother of deceased, and Mrs. Burns, of Muttama, is a sister.
