Personal Notes: |
Lizzie's eldest daughter Mary Christian (later known as Molly), in 1872 wed Donald MURCHISON, saddler of Tumut Street, Adelong. After the death of her baby Donald in 1873 and then husband Donald in 1874, Mary went to Queensland where she wed Gundagai-bom Thomas LINDLEY at Rockhampton in December 1879.
Tom was only 36 when he died on 15 July 1891 leaving Mary to raise four children aged from two to 11. Possessed of a true pioneering spirit, the young mother carried on Tom's mining operations successfully, eventually employing 20 miners. When mining slumped, the family established themselves as graziers.
Mary Lindley is still remembered fondly by many. In 1989 her one-time companion Mrs Angela Young recalled her as small in stature, neat and blithely happy. She was a superbly intelligent, cultured and lively-witted yet softly spoken iady who enjoyed doing fine embroidery, making clothes, playing "500", reading and discussing poetry. She particularly enjoyed the music of Peter Dawson, Gilbert & Sullivan and Verdi.
Molly"... possessed a bright and cheerful nature and was always in the forefront as a church and charity worker, and in the Great War associated herself with that loyal band of women who did so much for our men who served their King and country." Aged 86, Mary died on 29 July 1940 at the Eastwood home of her youngest daughter, Mary Clark. Nearly half a century after Tom Lindley's
death, Mary was laid to rest alongside him in the South Gundagai cemetery. Her grandsons Tom, Bill and Jack Lindley and nephews Jim and Jack Elworthy and Jack Isaac were her pallbearers. A special truck was chartered to carry the floral tributes to the well-loved and much respected lady. |
