Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 28 May 1940
OBITUARY MISS NAOMI HOAD The death occurred on Thursday last at Valmar Private Hospital of Miss Naomi Hoad, youngest daughter of the late George and Mary Ann Hoad. Born at Fitzroy-st., Tumut, 76 years ago, when five years old she went to England with her parents, brothers and sisters, returning again to Australia, and lived in Fitzroy-st. She retained vivid memories of her trip to England and it was very interesting to hear her speak of her travels both ways. They went over land to Melbourne by drays. The money for the trip was obtained in gold from the Bank, being weighed on scales instead of being counted out. They intended to remain in England, but could not settle down after living in sunny Australia, so returned again to reside in Tumut. At that time her father was offered land in Georgestreet, Sydney, at 30/per acre, but he preferred the country. Deceased never married, and after the death of her father had the sole care of her mother until her death at 89 years of age, after which she made her home with her eldest brother, George, and wife, till their death, then spending her remaining years with her nieces (Laura, May, Vera and nephew Fred). One brother, Walter of Cootamundra, 84 years, still survives, the other members of the family having predeceased her, they being George, John, Henry William, James Edward, Susan (Mrs. R. McCallum), Jemima (Mrs. E. M. Ball). The funeral left the Church of England after a short service conducted by the Rev. S. Broadfoot, the Rector, for the New Cemetery, on Friday afternoon. The pall bearers were Essell and Ken. Hoad, Arthur Fuller, Geo. Pearce, E. Nuttall (nephews) and Arthur Costello. Rev. S. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside, and Mr. C. Burt had charge of the funeral arrangements. Amongst many beautiful floral tributes were noticed: — Arthur, Vera and girls; Geo., May and family; Laura and Ted; Mrs. Howard and Mrs. E. McDonald; Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and family; Bill Bridle; Walter Hoad and family; Mrs, and Miss Delany; M. E. Oddy; E. Bell; I. and J. Henrick; Mr. and Mrs. Fred. L. Baker and family; Gert. and George and family; Mr. and Mrs. J. Lockeridge and family; Mr. and Mrs. H. Manns and family; Mrs. E. Buckley and family; Leo and Alice and family; Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Lester; Chas., Ada and Yvonne; the Loy family; Mrs. J. T. Clout; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Cotterill; Misses S. and E. Carr.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
