Personal Notes:
Norman was bom in Esk, the eldest of three of the family of Walter and Alice. In his youth he was involved in cycling and athletics, particultuly long-distance running, for which he won a Queensland Championship. He was a very competent musician and played saxophone, clarinet and violin in a donce band at Yarraman. Becoming involved in competitive rifle shooting, he soon became a well-known figure at prize meetings throughout the south east of the state and was recognised as a leading competitor and coach. Norman finished seventh in the Queen's Prize Meeting of1965.

Norman met his future wife, Joyce, when she worked as a nurse in the hospital in Esk and they were married in Tweed Heads, Norman then being but twenty-two years old. By mid 1944 their family numbered seven and all in due course married and had families oftheir own thus constituting, without doubt, the strongest branch of the 'Francis Family' tree.

A stint of twelve months in the 2/14th Light Horse Regiment in 1939 preceded later army service commencing in 1941 when he became an armourer. In this calling, Norman rose to the rank of Armourer Sergeant and followed this interest throughout his army career and into civilian life. There seems little doubt that Norman's love of the military rifle led him to a sport associated with it.

Norman and his family were domiciled at a couple of Wynnum addresses and he, himself, was based at army camps at Enoggera and Wacol, before they finally moved to Kilpatrick Street, Zillmere in 1951. Here Norman was to see out his working and active life.

In his retirement, Norman joined the Geebung Bowls Club and played 'B' grade pennants. Being a good handyman and very innovative, he occupied his time in making a lot of metal and timber objects for the home and the family. Norman died at Mt Olivet Hospital in Brisbane at the age of eighty-seven years.
