AUGUSTUS TFTEDELL OUIS HUNSTEDT 23151182-72 9/711882
Augustuswasthe son of ADOLPI{E HUNSTEDT andhiswife MARIA, nee EIDMISSEN (OR EDIMISSEN). At this stage, only the names of Adolphe's parents are known. Augustus was born in the town or village of Sempleben, in the State of Brunswick, Germany. The German States have changed over the years, and all I have found to date on a modern atlas is the city of Brunswich, now in Lower Saxony. Augustus was 27 years of age when he emigrated 1o Australia on the ship "Merbz" or 'Marbz' (I've come across both spellings). This ship departed fiom Hamburg and arrived in Moreton Bay, Queensland on 22"" March 1855. Augustus came under a scheme whereby squatters sent agents to Germany to find people who wanted to come to Australia. The squatters guaranteed employnent and put up the fifteen pounds passage money. The employee promised to remain working for that particular squatter for two years and the fifteen pounds was to be deducted from their wages. In actual fact, the squatters rarely deducted anything from their wages as these men proved to be excellent workers. Many remained with the squatters for many years, whilst others took up nearby land. (This information was obtained from the journal "Generation" December 1991.) An extract from the Moreton Bay Courier, dated March 24tl' 1855 reads - 'The German Emmigrant ships Merbz andAurora came into the Bay on Wednesday. The Captain of the Merbz reports that in the early part of the voyage he lost 47 of the passengersc, hiefly children; but that all now on board are healthy. The Health Officer visited the vessel on Saturday evening and we understand found the passengersa re healthy Many complaints however have been made on the subject of provisioning which appear to have been shamefully insufficient and we understand that the Health Officer has reported these complaints in the proper quarter.' Augustus was employed as an overseer on Cressbrook Station in the Brisbane Valley. |
