Personal Notes: |
Oscar St John 1899, the fifth child of Peter and Florence Johnson, married Mary BOURKE. Oscar served in World War I then worked for Cummins & Campbell at Mt Isa. In the second war he was a sergeant in Townsville Area Office then was seconded to the Commonwealth as Rehabilitation Officer. Post-war in his job as Employment Officer "he did his best to help the young Digger miss the obstacles that faced his own comrades of the first war." Oscar died suddenly at work on 14 Oct 1948.
Newspaper Obit (undated) Death Shortens a Useful Life The sudden death on Thursday morning of Mr Oscar St John Johnson Commonwealth Employment will leave a tinge of regret in the heart of every ex-service (in) North Queensland who has had cause to sel departmental guideance after his discharge, and in the hearts of countless others who were fortunate enough without assistance to slip into the old g**ive after their service was finished. To ex-service personnel the name of Oscar Johnson has been a by-word since the German and Jap cried enough in the late war. The late Mr Johnson who was 53, was a veteran of the first World War. When the balloon soared again in the second world catastrophe, he rallied to the colours but the years.
