Note 3: Burial info Bowen Independent 17 Nov 1950 Bowen Independent (Qld. : 1911 - 1954), Friday 17 November 1950, page 7 OBITUARY ELIZABETH ANN SPENCER. The death on 30th October of Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Spencer, aged 80 years, removed one of Bowen’s oldest natives, and a member of a family associated with the town since two years after the first settlement. The late Mrs. Spencer was a daughter of two Lancashire weavers, the late Mr. and Mrs. James Darwen, who emigrated to Australia in 1862. Their ship took twelve months to make the voyage and her skipper lost his ticket for making such a dilatory passage. The couple left England with two children and arrived at Bowen in 1863 with three, on the second vessel to bring settlers to the newly established port. Two other children were born in Bowen, including the late W. H. Darwen and Mrs. Spencer and John Darwen (now at Ayr), the only survivor of the family. The immigrant members of the family first lived at the police camp, under the protection of black troopers, and later built a home where the Club Hotel now stands. The father became Bowen’s first professional fisherman and was drowned while following this calling in 1875. Life was not easy for the family, and at an early age the late Mrs. Spencer went to work as a dressmaker, with Miss B. Zimmerman, who still follows that profession. In 1867, deceased married the late George Spencer, who worked with one of the town’s early Butchers, the late Mr. Champion. While their family was still in childhood, the husband met with a serious accident, falling from a delivery cart, which led to his demise in 1910. Left to provide for four young children, and without the benefit of pensions and child endowment, the late Mrs. Spencer returned to dressmaking, which she practised for many years until failing sight compelled her to retire. She had since lived quietly in her home in Norris Street with her sons. A devoted mother of a kindly disposition, she was well liked and respected by all who knew her. Deep sympathy is extended to sons William and Granville, daughters Amy (Mrs. S. Griffiths, Melbourne) and Martha (Mrs. G. W. McCallum, Bowen), also nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, and her brother (Mr. John Darwen, Ayr). A daughter and son predeceased her. The funeral left the Holy Trinity Church at 10 a.m. on 31st October, Rev. A. D. Thorpe performing the last sad rites at the graveside.
