AMELIA JANE CORNFORD AYR, Nov. 17. , The Grim Reaper has been active of late among several of the old pioneers, and the latest to succumb was Mrs. Amelia Jane Cornford, who had been in this district from the very early days of Ayr. Born in Gillingham, County Kent, England; the late Mrs. Cornford, in company with her husband, emigrated to this country in 1886, arriving by the "Dacca" in that year. Their first ten years were spent at Lochinvar during Mr. J. Gordon's time, and since then they had been resident in the Lower Burdekin. Mrs. Cornford and her husband had spent 42 years in this district. Her husband was superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday school, and also the Juvenile Rechabites, for many years. The late Mrs. Cornford and Mr. Cornford celebrated their golden wedding on January 21st of this year. Mrs. Cornford had suffered from indifferent health for some years, and passed away at her home at 12.30 a.m. Tuesday, November I5th. Her husband, one daughter (Mrs; Ellen M. Darwen) and one son (Mr. J. T. Cornford) are left to mourn, also several grandchildren. The funeral, which took place yesterday morning, was well attended.

A resident of this district for the past 45 years, Mr. B. R. Cornford crossed the Great Divide on Tuesday last at the residence of his son, Mr. Jack Cornford, Irvlngdale Estate (says “Delta Advocate,” 3/1/81). He was within two days of his 81st birthday. Mr. Cornford was born in Kent, England, and came direct to this district, being for some time in the employ of Mr. Gordon, on Lochinvar Station, Later he came to Ayr to live, carrying on mixed farming, etc. He was a most zealous Churchman, being actively associated with both the, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches. His wife pre deceased him three years ago. Mrs. J. Darwen, of Airdmillan is an only daughter. The funeral was on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev, B. Potter conducting the service.

The hus band, Mr. Jack Darwen, Is a brother of our late townsman, Mr. W. H Darwen. The burial took place at Ayr. Bowen Independent 12 March 1934 The many friends of Mr. J. Darwen will hear with regret of the death of his wife, which took place at the Home Hill Hospital on Wednesday at 1 o'clock at the age of 52 years The late Mrs. Darwen was a daughter, of the late Mr. and Mrs B. R. Cornford. who had spent many years of their life in the Ayr district. She came to Australia with her parents from Kent (England.) 48 years ago, and most of her life had been spent on the Burdekin The deceased was a most industrious woman in her home life. A husband and ten children are left to mourn their sad loss, three of whom are married, one of the daughters being Mrs. Joseph Lewis (Ayr) whose husband recently met with a serious accident, whilst, driving a tractor at Airdmillan the other married members of the family being Mrs. J. Searle and Mr. A. J. Darwen, both of Ayr. For many years the family have been interested in the dairying industry and it was only some 12 months ago they came to Home Hill to follow this calling. Mr. Jack Darwen is a brother of the late Mr. W. H. Darwen, who took such an active part in the public life of Bowen. The burial service took place at Ayr, when a large circle of friends gathered to pay their respects to one hold in high esteem.
