It falls to our sad lot to record the passing of William in and Henry Darwen, Editor-Proprietor and founder of “The Bowen Independent,” which took place at his residence, Brisbane Street, Bowen, on Sunday last at about 1.40 a.m., after a lengthy ill ness, following a breakdown. The late Mr. Darwen was born in the year 1873, and at the time of his death was but two months off his fifty-ninth birthday. He was well known in Bowen and outside centres and during the past 27 years or more took an active interest In the welfare of the community in general, being a member of practically every muni cipal and sporting body that function ed during his lifetime in Bowen, and at all times did his utmost to further their aims, often to the detriment of his own interests. Bowen Independent 28 June 1946
OBITUARY MRS. C. DARWEN.
It was with a feeling of deep regret that the citizens of Bowen and district learned of the passing of one of its most esteemed and beloved members on Sunday June 16 In the person of Caroline Darwen, relict of the late W. H. Darwen, founder of "The Bowen Independent,’' both of whom had played a prominent part In the life of the community since its very early days. The late Mrs. Darwen was born in Bowen 69 years ago, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Chrlstofferson, who had emigrated from Denmark and Sweden respectively and were among the earliest settlers in Bowen. The family resided for a time on Poole Island, where the breadwinner was employed at the meatworks conducted by Robert Chrlstison, and the older children of the family spent some of their childhood there. At the failure of the venture the family moved to Bowen where the death of the father occurred shortly afterwards. As there were no such things as pensions and child endowment in those days the children went early into service and the late Mrs. Darwen commenced to earn her living at the age of 13 years. She married in 1896 a young Bowenite in William Henry Darwen, who had completed his apprenticeship to the printing trade under F. T. Rayner at “The Port Denison Times," North Queensland’s first newspaper. He followed various pursuits in the first years of their married life, . including wood carting, wharf labouring, and other like jobs to which he was not too proud to turn a hand to provide for a growing family. They resided at that time near the new railway station, then a lonely spot with occasional camps of semi-civilised natives in the vicinity. When the late W. H. Darwen returned to the printing trade as proprietor of “The Bowen Record” (which became “The Bowen' Independent”) the family lived in the same building as the printing plant—the premises no occupied by Mr. H. P. Cox, where the present Editor of this paper was born. The work of a newspaper proprietor added to the duties of his wife, and she her part in the years which followed when they were both associated with practically all civic and sporting bodies and movements, connected with the progress of the district, and the manner in which the late Mrs. Darwen played her part endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. As Mayoress on three occasions - and in connection with her husband’s 26 years of Aldermanic life she carried her position with that quiet dignity which was in keeping with the best traditions of womanhood. Her life was one of love and service, and she was ever ready to give comfort and assistance to those who suffered bereavement or who were in need, of material assistance. Many there were who enjoyed the hospitality of her home and went away with expressions of deep thank fulness for her generosity. The loss of her husband in 1931 was a sad blow, but a large family who were then be beginning to set up their own homes and needed her advice in their little problems gave her a fresh field of interest and she found solace in watching over them, while the evergrowing number of grandchildren gladdened her heart. The last years were filled to overflowing by the love and devotion of her family who deeply appreciated the sacrifices she had made for them and spared no effort to make her happy. She was a foundation member of the Country Women’s Association in Bowen and it was characteristic of her that she would not take the position of President on the many occasions it was offered, preferring to give service among the members. She was Senior Vice-President at the time of her demise and recently was presented with a golden key to mark the 21st year of membership, being the oldest member of the branch. She spent many happy hours as a member of the Bowen Croquet Club, by whose members and those of the Bowen Bowling Club she will be greatly missed. She leaves a family of thirteen, comprising Vic. (Collinsville), Ron, Jim, Claude, Henry, Roy and Bob, Mesdames J. B, Ellison, F. A. Kirk, R. Carvolth, L. Snell, J. Payne, and Miss Enid Darwen, all of Bowen, and twenty-three grandchildren, also two brothers, Messrs. J. Ohrlstofferson (Townsville) and C. Chrlstofferson (Bowen), and three sisters, Mesdames H. Jurgens and J. Weekes (Euri) and J. H. Darwin (Bowen) to deeply mourn. The funeral left the , Holy Trinity Church, Rev. A. D. Thorpe conducting the burial service.
