Mr. James Howell, a very old resident of Balmain, who for 25 years past had been in the employ of the Union Steam Navigation Company, Limited, died suddenly at his residence, Erwin Cottage, Theodore street, Balmain, on Monday morning, from pleurisy The deceased was 69 years of age, and leaves a family of three sons and one daughter .He was engaged at his work on Saturday until midday, and had not then complained of feeling unwell. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon to the Wesleyan portion of the Field of Mars cemetery, and was largely attended. Captain Comity represented the company at the funeral, the arrangements for which were carried out by Messrs Wood and Co.

Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate- 9 Aug 1909 Obit: The funeral of the late James Sneddon of Lindsay Street Hamilton, which took place on Saturday afternoon, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends, including the officers of the Hand and Heart Lodge of the Ancient Order of the Druids, Newcastle, of which branch, the deceased was the oldest member, having joined 45 years ago. Messrs. S. Thompson, D. McNaughton, I. Keddie and W. Fraser were pall bearers. The interment was in the Presbyterian section of Sandgate Cemetery, where a burial service was conducted by the Rev. Anderson, who also held a short service at the house previous to the cortage leaving. The late Mr. Sneddon was a native of Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, and arrived in Hamilton 54 years ago, living in the same house the whole time. His place of residence was then surrounded by bush and the number of dwellings at the Borehole, as the suburb at that time was called, were few and far between. The deceased is survived by his widow, 4 sons, 3 daughters and 36 grandchildren. The relatives were the recipients of numerous expressions of sympathy and many floral tributes of respect were placed on the coffin.

Newcastle Chronicle 12 Nov 1868 Samuel Straw, on bail, appeared to answer a charge of refusing to contribute to the support of his illegitimate child, the offspring of one Betsy Sneddon. Mr. Chambers, junr, appeared for the complainant and Mr. Mullen for the defendant. The case was again postponed. Newcastle hronicle 5 Nov 1868 Samuel Straw, miner, in custody, was charged with being the father of an illegitimate child of one Betsy Sneddon, and being about to abscond from the district. The prisoner was remanded till the 11th instant; bail allowed. Newcastle Chronicle 10 Dec 1868 Samuel Straw appeared, on summons, to answer the charge of refusing to support the illegitimate child of Betsy Sneddon. The complainant said she was the daughter of James Sneddon, and lived at the Borehole. On 25 August 1865, she was delivered of a female child, which was still alive. The child was born at her father's house.............. The evidence being of such a grossly contradictory nature, the Bench dismissed the case. (Jane's birth was registered under the name Snedden - mother Betsy. She married under the name Jane Straw.)
