Dear Helen,

I hope you don't mind me getting in touch. I came across your family tree site online and was able to cross-reference it against my own. It appears that my great great grandfather Arthur Smith's half brother William emigrated to Australia in 1854. Arthur himself was a butcher in the village of Crich. His son James was my great grandfather, in turn his son Arthur (born 1909) was my grandfather, although he died in 1946 when my father, John Keith Smith, was just one. My father was brought up in Crich and moved to the town of Stafford in the 1960s.

Do you happen to know why William Smith emigrated? The rest of his family, all wheelwrights, joiners and butchers, seem to have stayed in the same place! Maybe it was in search of new opportunities.

Anyway, please don't worry about replying. I just thought I would acknowledge the connection and congratulate you on all your hard work. I have only just started my family tree research and was pleased to be able to confirm what I have done so far. We did not previously know very much about the Smith branch and I am sure my father will be interested to know he has some distant Australian relatives!
