Personal Notes: |
Went to WA working in the mines while the kids were very small, then to the Towers (mines) and on to Ayr about 1908.
Didn't have much of a sense of humor - according to his daughter Elva. G.H. Smith and Sons, Farmers, Airdmillan George Henry Smith, an engineer and tool maker, moved in 1900 from Daylesford, Victoria, to Charters Towers, Queensland, where he worked in the Brilliant and St. George gold mines. His wife Mary and five children, William, Ethel, Harold, Frank and Roy followed at a later date. Two further children, Percy and Elva, were born in Charters Towers (Elva was born in Ayr). As the fortunes of gold fluctuated, George with his brother Richard, decided to investigate sugar cane farming in the Burdekin. Notification from Mr. H.G. Bell, manager of Kalamia Estate in 1909, that the sugar mill would accept cane grown at Airdmillan, they purchased 178 acres of land in that area in 1911. This land was cleared by intensive manual labour. The first recorded crop was delivered to the mill in 1915. Descendants of George and Mary Smith have continued to farm this property from 1928 until September 2007 when it was sold, but it continues as a cane farming business. Sons, William and Harold, served in the AIF in World War I: William in France and Harold at Lone Pine where he was wounded and died later at sea. William was Chairman of the RSSAILA Board of Trustees for 20 years, and was the instigator of the purchase of the present property and grounds in Ayr. He later became involved in the sugar industry as farmer, grower's representative and shareholder and Chairman of Haughton Sugar Company. Frank and Roy used their musical tallents as members of the Brass Band in Ayr, while Frank sang in the local Choir. Percy served in the AIF in World War II in New Guinea. Elva entertained on the piano at musical functions and also played the organ at the Presbyterian Church. Elva, who still resides in Ayr, is the only surviving member of the family. There are 72 direct descendants from the union of George and Mary Smith. |

SMITH.--On the 11th November, at Toowoomba, Queensland, George Henry, third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith, Mayfield, Daylesford; loved brother of Mrs. J. Wood, Will, Frank, Mrs. J. H. Smith, Joseph, Charles, and Mrs.E. G. Robinson. Townsville Daily Bulletin 16th Nov 1928 AYR NOTES Monday also brought the news by telegram of the unexpected death of Mr. George Henry Smith, at Toowoomba. Mr. Smith was a farmer at Airdmillan and for some years was in partnership with his brother, Mr. R. Smith, who died about a year ago. The late Mr Smith had been in indifferent health since his brother's decease, and had been an inmate of the District Hospital. He went to Toowoomba a few months ago for special treatment and the last report was very reassuring. The end was very sudden as the news of his death came as a great shock to his wife and family. The body is being brought from Toowoomba by the mail train arriving early on Friday morning and the funeral will move from the Ayr Presbyterian Church the same afternoon. |
