DEATH OF MR. EDWARD LORD. It is with regret that we have to record the death of another of our oldest colonists, Mr. Edward Lord, who expired about half-past 9 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, Rockville, East St. Leonards. Mr. Lord was the third son of the late Simeon Lord, one of the first free settlers in the colony, and brother of the late George Lord, and of the Hon. F. Lord, M.L.C. He was born in Sydney on November 18, 1814, his death occurring on the seventieth anniversary of his birthday. He received his education at private schools, amongst others at the establishment presided over by the late Mr. Halleran, a well-known old colonist. When a young man he entered upon the management of his father's business, developing a large amount of commercial tact and ability. He remained in this position for several years up to the time of his entering the office of the City Council, where he filled the position of city treasurer for upwards of 30 years, discharging its onerous duties with conscientiousness and skill, He was regarded as an expert in financial matters, and this led to his occupying prominent positions on the management of several large commercial institutions. Thus he was a trustee of the Savings Bank, chairman of (the board of directors of the Australian Joint Stock Bank, and a director in the following companies:-Australasian S.N.Company, Colonial Mutual Insurance Company, and the Southern Insurance Company. He took little part in public matters, but was for many years an alderman of East St. Leonards, of which borough he was twice elected mayor. He was once requisitioned to allow himself nominated for the representation of St. Leonards, but de- clined in consequence of ill-health. Mr. Lord was a man who was universally respected. His manner was courteous, unostentatious, and kindly, and he was of a very benevolent disposition. He was married about 32 years ago to Miss Hyde and leaves two sons and three daughters, one of whom is married. David Lord, the well known and respected champion amateur sculler who expired about two years ago, was his oldest son. For about eight years Mr. Lord suffered from diabetes, and the disease proved fatal. As he was in ill-health, his death was not unexpected, and he expired yesterday morning, retaining the possession of his faculties to the last. The funeral is to leave his late residence for St. Thomas' cemetery, St Leonards, at 11 o'clock to-morrow (Thursday) morning. |
