The Queenslander 27 July 1878
Death of Mr. R. S. Lord.
INTELLIGENCE was received in Brisbane last Tuesday of the death of Mr. Robert Lord, of Gympie. During the previous two or three days strong hopes had been entertained of the deceased gentleman s recovery, but on the above morning, we understand, his illness took a decided turn for the worse, and death ensued at a later period of the day. Mr. Lord was a member of an old Australian family, being the fourth son of Mr. Simeon Lord, formerly of Tasmania, an old and justly respected colonist, now a resident in Queensland. The late Mr. Robert Lord was largely interested in mining on Gympie, being a very free specu lator and a popular employer. The miners on Gympie will miss Mr. Lord much, and his loss will also be felt in other directions. He had taken up large selections at Widgee, and was actively engaged in developing their resources. Quite recently he had spent much time and money in the careful selection of high-class stock. Mr. Lord represented Gympie in the Legislative Assembly in 1876, and was a popular representative with his constituents, but in consequence of the demands upon his time he resigned his seat at the close of the session in that year, much against the wish of the electors who had entrusted him with the duty of looking after the interest of the goldfield. Many people will be sorry to learn of Mr. Lord's almost sudden death, as he was a man of many friends, and generally respected by all who came in contact with him.

Mercury (Hobart) 12 Aug 1878
DEATH OF MR. ROBERT S. LORD.

An obituary notice in to-day's Mercury announces the death of a very promising native of Tasmania, Mr. Robert Stuart Lord, son of Mr. Simeon Lord. The Gympie correspondent of the Brisbane telegraph says:- " During the past fortnight or nearly so, the health of Mr. Lord, our late member, has prominently and principally occupied attention. The first intimation of his illness was made public on Saturday week, and from that time till Tuesday evening, reports more or less unfavourable were in circulation, when death terminated his sufferings. Mr. Lord has always occupied a high position in public estimation, as a man and a citizen. His connection with some of the most extensive mining operations on the field, and his personal manners, together with the confidence placed in his integrity by the electors, singled him out as the repre- sentative for Gympie, in 1873." The Courier of July 24 says :-"Mr, Lord was a member of an old Aus-tralian family, being fourth son of Mr. Simeon Lord, formerly of Tasmania, an old and justly respected colonist, now a resident in Queensland. The late Mr. Robert Lord was largely interested in mining in Gympie, being a very free speculator and a popular employer. The miners of Gympie will miss Mr. Lord much, and his loss will also be felt in other directions. He had taken up large selections at Widgee, and was actively engaged in developing their resources. Quite recently he had spent much time and money in the careful selection of high-class stock." The Gympie correspondent of the same paper, writing under date July 20, says :-" To say that the people of Gympie are deeply grieved is not a mere figure of speech. Mr. Lord has been identilied with Gympie from the first opening of the goldfield ; one of the pioneers, in fact, of the Lady Mary and Caledonian reefs, in which he was very successful. He had deservedly won the esteem and regard of his fellow-townsmen, and miners particularly, alike for his frank and genial deportment, as for the marked interest he took in the advancement of mining affairs, and matters generally for the public good. On Wednesday the town was in mourning, all

the stores and places of business being closed. At many of the principal claims, flags were hung at half mast, some of the claims altogether suspending work for the afternoon - when the, funeral took place the miners wishing to pay a last trlbute of respect by attending the same. The cortege at the funeral was one of the largest yet seen in Gympie.

THE LATE MRS. SIMEON LORD.

A well-known figure is lost to Brisbane society in the person of Sarah Lord, wife of Simeon Lord, sen., of Highmead, Upper Roma-street. She was known amongst a large circle of friends, but more especially in connection with charitable institution*. It is much to be feared that a constant attendance on official duties week after week reduced her failing strength too much before her recent visit to Sydney. In connection with city institutions she was on the committees of the Lady Bowen Hospital, North Brisbane Benevolent Society, the Governesses' Home, and on the committee as vice president of one of these almost ever since her arrival in the colony some fifteen years ago. She was born at Hobart, Tasmania, on the 13th October, 1814, married 15th June, 1831, and died on Saturday morning last at the residence of her son-in-law, Colonel Airey, Victoria Barracks, Paddington, Sydney; Her loving, genial nature and keen interest in the welfare of her fellow creatures will be sorely missed by a large portion of the community.

The Queenslander 25 June 1892
The late Mr. Simeon Lord, of Brisbane, was not merely an old resident of this city (writes Mr. N.Bartley), but also of Tasmania in bygone days. He was the father of the late Robert Lord, one time member for Gympie, and he owned the fine pastoral property known as Eskdale, on the Upper Brisbane River. The name of Lord is borne by a large number of disconnected families in Australia; there was Mr. Edward Lord, of Drayton, in this colony, a pioneer of 1811, and father of Mrs. George Raff; they are numerous also in Sydney, where a Mr. Lord was city treasurer at one time; while in Tasmania there were three or four distinct families of the name: Edward Lord, of Lawrenny; Lord, of Orielton; and the subject of our present notice, Mr. Simeon Lord, of Avoca; another Simeon Lord, who owned property at Botany, near Sydney, died, more than fifty years back, in that city. The late Mr. Simeon Lord, of Brisbane, was a man of business energy and sterling integrity, in whom the healthy climate of Tasmania laid (as it has done with many others) the foundation of a long, useful, and busy life.
