Morwell Advertiser 20 Dec 1945
GEORGE PERCY EVANS
FAILING health over the past few
years had made not unexpected the
news of the passing of a former leading
citizen and business man of Morwell in
the person of George Percy Evans, who
died at his home at 204 Tennyson Street,
St. Kilda, on 14th December.
Coming to Morwell in 1913 from Mur
toa, where he was born, to take over
the authorised newsagency business, he
quickly found time to actively engage in
the public, social, sporting and com
munity life of the town. In twenty-four
years residence in Morwell he became an
elected member of the Waterworks Trust
and held the office of chairman for a
period. He was active in the mannage
ment of the affairs of the old Mechanics'
Institute, and prior to his death was the
sole remaining trustee. He was also
keenly interested in the State School, of
whose committee of management he was
a member.
Despite a busy business and public
life, the late Mr. Evans gave his attention
to most every sporting activity in the
town. As a member of the local Bowling
Club he played an important part, not
only in furthering the general interests
of the club, but also in upholding its
prestige in inter-club conpetitions,. His
love for the game led him, on trans
ferring to Melbourne, to join up with the
South St. Kilda Club, in which he held
at varying times the two. preminer posi
tions of president and club champion.
He was a member of ithe A.N.A. and
Masonic Lodges, to the affairs of Which
he devoted the same zeal as characterised
his other activities.
It was a great comfort to him during
his recent illness to have had the oppor
tunity of welcoming home his son, War
rant Officer Jack Evans, from P.OW.
camps in Germany. The widespread
circle of his friends in this district, joins
with the family in mourning his death,
