The late Mr Meizner had been a resident of Bowen for nearly 45 years, having arrived here in 1864. Mr Meizner, who would have been 75 years of age next April, has left a widow, who is now over 70. The descendants of the deceased pioneer are: — Seven children (five daughters and two sons) all married, 33 grandchildren; and three great-grand-children, the last mentioned being Mrs Thomas Barton's two children, and the infant son of Mr Alfred Darwen.

An old identity of the bush, Charlie Mohr, passed away at the Hospital on Monday last at the age of 59 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Rymer (Church of England) officiating at the graveside. The cause of death was an old leg trouble. Many years ago he had a leg badly broken on Pretty Bend and was in the hospital twelve months. The leg was badly set and had to be broken again and re-set, but it never got properly right and eventually caused his death. A genuine chap, Charlie was well liked. He was a native of Bowen, his parents, residing near Argyll Park in the early days, but spent most of his time in the bush, was a typical bushman, good with stock and very use ful on a station. He was em ployed by members of the Isbell family on Pretty Bend and other stations for a great number of years. He was an expert greenhide worker and could make almost anything out of that commodity. He leaves a wife, two daughters and one son.

Northern Herald (Cairns) 26 July 1931 THE LATE GEORGE DAYES. MAREEBA. July 18 The news of the sudden death of Mr. George Dayes at the Mareeba, District Hospital from pneumonia, after only one week's illness, came, as a great shock to his large circle of friends. The deceased gentleman had just passed his 50th birthday, and was well and favor ably known among the droving frater naty in his younger days, then taking to the butchering business. During his last 20 odd years he carried on his occupation of butcher, in Forsayth, Her berton, Milaa Millaa, and Mareeba. He was of a happy disposition, and always had a kind word and a smile for the youngsters. He married Miss Louisa Meizner, whose mother (Mrs. Meizner of Bowen) was 91 years old last Christmas, and still able to get about though very frail, at Bowen, both of them being born in that North Queensland land town ; indeed both were ....nates at Bowen. Deceased leaves a widow and nine children to mourn the loss of a good hus band and father, all of whom were with him before the end. The sons are ??m James (Bowen, married), ???e(-Millaa Millaa), Walter (Mil la Millaa), Lewis (Atherton), Fred (Mareeba),- Arthur (Mareeba) ???s (Tarzali). Alfred (Mareeba), Norman (Mareeba).' NORTH QUEENSLAND'S OLDEST RESIDENT. The passing of Mrs. Christina Meiz ner on Sunday last at the age of 98 years, removed from our midst one who has lived in the Bowen district since the year after its first settle ment, and who was without doubt North Queensland's oldest resident. The late Mrs. Meissner was born in Poland on Christmas Eve 1838 and after her marriage to Carl Meizuer. came to Australia in the sailing ship Lar-a-Shelli, landing at Bowen in Bowen in 1802. The township then consisted of one building, the Customs House, and a number of tents. Liquor was sold, but before being consumed it had to be tasted by the Pidice,- one of whom was father of the late Alex. Lloyd, of Invorooua. The couple trav elled to Strathmore Station by bullock team the same year, when that station was in its foundation stage soon after being taken up by the late Edward Cunningham. They had then one child, and during the voyage out an other was born, which died at sea. The couple later worked at Havilah Station, which was also in its embryo stage. Then about sixty years ago they returned to Bowen, where Carl Meizner and his eldest son selected land on the Upper Don and grew maize, which they tanked for better prices. Mrs. Meizner, like all the true pioneer women, kept the home fires burning by running a dairy with others of the growing family and sup plied the town with milk, twelve to fifteen cows being milked daily. They raised a family of thirteen children and their descendants today include 55 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren and 33 great-great-grandchildren. For over thirty years this fine couple lived and worked their property on the Don, retiring about 20 years ago. Carl Meiz ner passed away only a year later, and since then "Grannie.” as the old lady was affectionately known, had resided at the old home, showing that, the hard pioneering life bred stayers by retaining all her faculties and watch ing her years multiply until the cen tury mark was in sight. Full of ener gy until her short illness during last year she proved her enduring qualit ies when a fall resulted in a broken arm. She bravely bore, the pain for four days until a neighbour obtained medical aid, and did not make a sound during (be painful treatment of the Injured member, which was swollen to several times its normal size. This ordeal, however, took its toll and but for its harmful effects she would have reached her hundredth birthday, an age she greatly hoped to achieve. A more perfect example of the finest type of the nation’s pioneers could not be found to excel her in the good qualities of unbounded energy, endurance and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. She fought the battle of life with a smile through many chequered years and leaves the example of her indom itable spirit for the coming generations to ponder on. Mr. P. Quinn, when visiting the slaughter yard on Saturday saw the note and made a search and found Dayes in a nearby shed lying dead with a bullet wound over the ear. A discharged .22 bore pea rifle was lying nearby. Death evidently had been Instantaneous. Day was a single man and had relatives in the Mareeba district.' . . ...
