Sydney Morning Herald 9 Sept 1915
A GALLANT DEED. TROOPER HOWARTH' S BRAVERY. In a letter written from Valetta Hospital, Malta, to Mrs Howarth, of 191 Norton street, Leichhardt, Chaplain W. Guy Pearce describes the manner in which her husband, Trooper H M S Howarth, was wounded. He writes: - "Your husband is making a wonderful recovery and only his fine constitution and splendid pluck have brought him through. He received his injuries in removing a live shell out of the reach of danger, and it exploded in his left hand. As a result of his brave action he has lost his left fore-arm and his left eye and that he escaped with his life is quite a miracle." Trooper Howarth, who was formerly employed as a linesman in the Commonwealth service, went through the Boer War, as did his father, Mr. John Howarth of Randwick, who was Q.M.S. for the 2nd A.M.C. The family is well represented in the present struggle, four sons of Mr. Howarth having enlisted. Of these one has been killed and two wounded, while the fourth, who took part in the original landing, has so far escaped injury. Sydney Morning Herald 12 Oct 1916 WAR CASUALTIES - KILLED PRIVATE J. W. HOWARTH. Private John William Howarth, third son of the late J. S. Howarth, who was killed In the landing at Gallipoli, and Mrs. Howarth, late of Randwick, has been killed In France. An elder brother is In H.M.S. Psyche, and another brother is in camp waiting to embark. This family had father and three sons in Africa, and four were at the Dardanelles. John was killed, Horace lost his left arm and eye, Harold was wounded at Lone Pine, and Cyril was invalided home after an attack of typhus. Thurday 31 August 1916 , Page 25 of the Bendigonian Newspaper, Bendigo, Victoria THE HOWARTH FAMILY. Mr. John Howarth, head of the now well known Howarth family, which has such a splendid record in the doings of the present war, was born a soldier in the Victoria Barracks, Sydney, his father being one of the llth Regiment (now known as the Devons), who were stationed there at the time. He worked himself up in the militia forces until he became quarter-master-sergeant. When the Boer war broke out he was one of the first Australians to volunteer, and served in South Africa for 14 months. Three of his sons followed him to the South African war, and at the close returned to Australia. At the outbreak of the present war, when the Expeditionary Forces were called for, Quartermaster-Sergeant Howarth, who is now an officer of the Commonwealth Electoral department, again offered his services, but being over the age, had to stand aside. His four sons; however, all married men with families, went to Egypt with various contingents, and all took part in the landing at the Dardanelles, the eldest, Sergeant J. S. Howarth, being killed in action by machine gun fire. The second son, Trooper Horace Howarth, was one of the Light Horse that fought as foot soldiers at Gallipoli. After being in the trenches for nine weeks, he had the misfortune to lose his left arm and the sight of his left eye; which occurred as follows:- One day in the trenches a Turkish shell (an 18-pounder) fell near him and his mates without exploding. He rushed forward to cast it away out of danger, but just as he was in the act of picking it up it burst, shattering his left arm. He was taken to Malta, where the arm had to be amputated just below the elbow. A bullet also entered his head and lodged behind the left eye, where it remained for five weeks, until the eye had to be removed, and the bullet extracted. Trooper Howarth now wears the extracted bullet on his watch chain. He went to Sydney on his return to have an artificial arm fitted. The third son, Private Harold Howarth, was ,wounded in the right hand by a bomb at the Lone Pine action, and has returned home. 'The fourth son, Private Cyril Howarth, who also took part in the memorable landing, has been invalided home through a bad attack of fever. He having recuperated at Castlemaine, is about to return to the front again. Mrs. James Scott, of Castlemaine, is a sister of the Howarth brothers, and her son, James, 18 years old, who was employed in the engineering department at Thompson's foundry, is now on his way to the front. Mrs. Scott has also five nephews in the firing line, while the deceased Sergeant J. S. Howarth's eldest son is now with the Australian fleet in the North Sea. The above is a first-class record for one family. |
