The woman, who is believed to have been differing from a nervous breakdown, was a patient at a Glenelg private hospital. She was reported earlier as missing from the hospital. Constable E Budgen is preparing a report for the coroner. Mrs. Were had not been in good health for some time and had been a patient in a private hospital. She was well known in Narrandera. having visited this town for periods during the time her son, the Rev. J. O. Were, now chaplain in the Australian Navy, was rector at St. Thomas' Church. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. E. O Were aged 66 years. Were Mr. Montague B. Were, whose death occurred at Adelaide on Friday last, at the age of 66, was proprietor of Were's Mercantile Agency Ltd , Adelaide. After being educated at All Saints' Church Grammar School, East St. Kilda, he joined the firm of J. B. Were and son, founded by his grandfather, Jonathan Binns Were, in 1839. His father, J. H. Were, was actually the 'Son' in the firm when that title was adopted in 1863. Mr. Montague Were subsequently transferred to H. G. Dunn and Co., whose business in Adelaide he managed for some years before establishing his own organisation. He was a well-known Rotarian. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter. One son is Rev. John Were, Church of England rector at Narandera, and a chaplain for the Narandera Air Training School. The other son is in the R.A.A.F. The daughter is training as a nurse in Adelaide. Barrier Miner (Broken Hill) 31 July 1937 REV. WERE TO LEAVE ON MONDAY The Rev. J. O. Were, who has been on the staff of St. Peter's clergy for the past six months, will leave Broken Hill on Monday night on the first stage of his trip to England, where he will study at Oxford University. Mr. Were will embark for England on August 18. Mr. Were, who will reside at Christchurch College, won a two years' scholarship which is awarded to the student obtaining the best all round pass in the Australian College of Theology. Mr. Were hopes to re- turn to Broken Hill when he completes his studies. |
