Note 1: Reg No 2348/1889 Macdougall John C - parents Archibald and Sarah - Balmain http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13739425?searchTerm=Falkiner The Sydney Morning Herald 21 Sept 1889 The friends of Mr. John Falkiner, of West Maitland, are respectfully informed that the funeral of his late SON-IN-LAW, Mr. John Campbell Macdougall, will move from his late residence, Darling Road, Balmain, opposite Town Hall, on Sunday afternoon, at half past 1 o'clock, for Wesleyan Cemetery The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser Tuesday 1 Oct 1889 Page 2 Death off Mr. John C. Macdougall.(Balmain Observer, Sept 28th.) The demise of the above named gentleman, was made the cause of an inquest on Saturday at the Town Hall Hotel, Balmain, before the city coroner, Mr. Woore. The witnesses examined proved that Mr. Mcdougall was last seen at 10 p.m on Saturday in Cameron-street, apparently proceeding towards his home in his usual health. Dr. Wilson and the widow gave evidence to the effect that deceased had said he had tripped over a stone, and, in falling struck his head against the kerb. The doctor described his treatment of deceased and said that on the day before death an incision had been made in the scalp, by himself and Dr. Bott, to search for a possible fracture of the skull, but none could be found, and that paralysis set in about twenty hours before death. On the day after deceased died he (the doctor) together with Dr. Bott made a post mortem examination of deceased's skull, when they discovered that it had a fracture 2 and a half inches long, not where the blow on the scalp was visible but two inches forward of it. The fracture, and rupture of one of the principal arteries of the brain were the cause of death. A verdict was given to the effect that deceased had met his death through tripping over a stone, and in the fall, fracturing his skull.Mr. Macdougall had not been very long in Balmain, but was well known throughout Victoria, having been for some years a Wesleyan minister. He was a good speaker and a lecturer of no mean ability. Some six or seven years ago while he was residing at Geelong, the deceased met with an accident through the wheel of a buggy coming off, and on that occasion suffered concussion of the brain, narrowly escaping death, and he never seemed the same afterwards. His resigned his position in the Wesleyan Church in Victoria, and joined his brother in literary work in connection with this journal. He was a man who made himself liked in all kinds of company, and in Balmain had gained general respect, numerous letters of regret at his death having been received from leading residents. The last rites were paid to the remains of the deceased on Sunday afternoon when several relations and intimate friends attended the funeral to the Waverley cemetery, the ceremony being conducted by the Revs. W. G. R. Stephenson (Wesleyan) and R. McKeown (Church of England) and the Revs. E, D. Madgwick and P. J. Stephen were also present and the Rev. J. Cosh, M.A., attended at the house. Mr. Macdougall's fellow workers in this office desire to record here, their deep sense of their irreparable loss. [Residents of West Maitland will remember Mr. McDougall as one of the Wesleyan Ministers in West Maitland. He was married to a daughter of Mr. John Falkiner of this town.]

E. O Were aged 66 years. Were Mr. Montague B. Were, whose death occurred at Adelaide on Friday last, at the age of 66, was proprietor of Were's Mercantile Agency Ltd , Adelaide. After being educated at All Saints' Church Grammar School, East St. Kilda, he joined the firm of J. B. Were and son, founded by his grandfather, Jonathan Binns Were, in 1839. His father, J. H. Were, was actually the 'Son' in the firm when that title was adopted in 1863. Mr. Montague Were subsequently transferred to H. G. Dunn and Co., whose business in Adelaide he managed for some years before establishing his own organisation. He was a well-known Rotarian. He leaves a widow, two sons, and one daughter. One son is Rev. John Were, Church of England rector at Narandera, and a chaplain for the Narandera Air Training School. The other son is in the R.A.A.F. The daughter is training as a nurse in Adelaide. Barrier Miner (Broken Hill) 31 July 1937 REV. WERE TO LEAVE ON MONDAY The Rev. J. O. Were, who has been on the staff of St. Peter's clergy for the past six months, will leave Broken Hill on Monday night on the first stage of his trip to England, where he will study at Oxford University. Mr. Were will embark for England on August 18. Mr. Were, who will reside at Christchurch College, won a two years' scholarship which is awarded to the student obtaining the best all round pass in the Australian College of Theology. Mr. Were hopes to re- turn to Broken Hill when he completes his studies.
