Freeman’s Journal (Sydney) 19 May 1894
DEATH OF MR. W. E. PLUNKETT.
William Edmond Plunkett passed away at his
residence, ' Wollerang,' Darling Point, on Tues-
day last. The deceased had reached the age of
66. He was the son of the late Captain
Plunkett of the 80th Regiment. Mr. Plunkett,
who was born at Garry Castle, County West-
meath, in the year 1826, belonged to a
family proud of their descent from the noble
houses of Fingal, Louth, and Dunsany. He was
quite a boy when he came to Australia with his
father in 1837. The 80th Regiment was stationed
at Sydney, and afterwards at Wollongong. Cap-
tain Plunkett sold out his commission when the
regiment proceeded to India, at the same time
accepting the appointment as Police Magistrate
at Goulburn. Meanwhile young Plunkett had
entered the Government service as a clerk ia the
Sheriff's Department. Promoted to the position of
secretary to the then Attorney-General, the late
Hon. John Hubert Plnnkett (a relative), Mr. Plun-
kett afterwards obtained the appointment of
Under-Secretary for Justice and Public Instruction.
When the departments were divided he was made
Under-Secretary for Justice, which position he
held till the year 1887, when, owing to ill-health,
he retired from the Public Service on his pension
after 40 years service. Mr. Plunkett was for
20 years an attendant at the Woollahra Catholic
Church, and in his last illness the rites of the
Church were administered by the Very Rev. P.
Slattery, O.S.F. The deceased has left a widow
and five children. One of the sons, Mr. William
Patrick Plunkett, is a member of the firm of Ellis,
Makinson, and Plunkett. Mr. Arthur Plunkett
is Clerk of Petty Sessions at Bulli ; and the third
son, Mr. John Plunkett, is in the office of Ellis,
Makinson, and Plunkett. One of the daughters
of the deceased was married to the late Mr.
Atcheson, C.P.S., Mudgee. In connection with
the Plunkett family, it is worth noting that the
Honourable and Very Rev. Fr. Plunkett, of the
Redemptorists (Victoria), is uncle to the present
Eight Hon. tbe Earl of FingaL, who is just now
touring the colonies.
The funeral on Wednesday afternoon was very
largely attended. The chief mourners were Mr.
W. P. Plunkett, Mr. A. Plunkett, and Mr. John
