The Queenslander (Brisbane) 12 Dec 1914
LATE MR. FREDERICK LORD
DEATH OF A PUBLIC MAN.
The death occurred on Saturday morning
at his residence at Eskdale, Tower-street,
Albion, of Mr. Frederick Lord, late
of Eskdale station, Esk, and an ex-member
of the Legislative Assembly. The late
Mr. Lord was born at Bona Vista, Avoca,
' Tasmania", on November 8, 1841. In early
life he received tuition on the island,
and at the age of 10 years he went to
England, where he received further
education at Blackheath Proprietary School
and King's College, London. Leaving
school, he was articled to Mr. Richard
Johnston, Chief Engineer on the Great
Northern Railway. At the expiration of
his term of service he returned to Tasmania,
where he remained for a
few months, and then went on
to Sydney, and shortly afterwards
to Brisbane. He subsequently
visited Sydney again and returned to
Brisbane where he entered the Surveyor
Generals Department as a licensed
surveyor and spent some time in prosecuting
Government work on the Darling
Downs. A few months after Gympie
broke out he, in company with his
brother, Robert, proceeded there, where
they were fairly successful, having secured
a share in the celebrated No. 4 South
Lady Mary claim. At Gympie he was
elected a member of the first local mining
court, and in 1867 was appointed a
justice of the peace. In 1867 Mr. Lord
again came to Brisbane, and during
March of the same year he went to
Toowoomba and there practised his
profession for a few years. In conjunction
with his father and brothers, Mr. Lord
selected land on the Downs in 1868. In
-1873 he was engaged in prospecting for
tin in the Crow's Nest district, and
in the same year he, with his
father and brothers, took up land at
Eskdale. The following year (1874) he
left Toowoomba for eskdale, where he
resided with his family, and subsequently
he purchased Eskdale station, with its
stock, from the late Mr. James lvory, of
Bundamba. Mr. Lord always took a
keen interest in the welfare of the
district. He had been chairman of the
Marsupial Board, and was chairman of
the Esk Divisional Board for nine years
in the aggregate, filling the position for
some years consecutively. He was also
director of Moreheads Limited and
the Queensland National Bank. He was
elected for the Stanley electorate at the
general elections of 1893, 1896, and 1899.
Mr. Ernest Lord, of Eskdale station, is
a son of the late Mr. F.Lord. One
daughter is married to Dr. L'Estrange of
Albion, and another to Mr. Harold
Brown, of Messrs. Dalgety and Co.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon,
and was largely attended. The
Rev. Canon Osborn conducted the service.

DEATH OF MRS. MARY DA COSTA
LORD
The death occurred at her residence,
Tower street, Albion, yesterday afternoon
of Mrs. Mary Da Costa Lord, relict of the
late Fredercik Lord, who for many years
represented the Stanley electorate in the
State Parliament. Mrs. Lord, who was
aged 73, had been ailing for some time and
the end was not unexpected. She was a
daughter of the late James Warner, who
had surveyed Brisbane before there were
many residents in the locality. Mrs. Lord
had resided at Eskdale station in the Esk
district for many years, and her son on
the day of her death took over this
property from the syndicate of which his
mother had been the surviving member.
The deceased lady had spent many years
on the station during the tough pioneering
days, and her death will lose to Queensland
another of the fine old pioneers who
helped to make her what she is at the present
time. Mrs. Lord took a prominent
part in local charities, and had ever been
prodigal in her donations to the poor
and deserving. She leaves one son and
two daughters to mourn her loss, Mr
Ernest Lord of Eskdale: Mrs. H. R.
Brown, and Mrs. Guy L'Estrange, both
of this city. The funeral will move from
her residence at 10 o'clock to-morrow
morning for the Toowong Cemetery, where
