2. Sacred to the memory of Joseph Hobbs O.B.E., Killavalla House, Borrisokane who fell asleep on 6 November 1949 aged 63 years. Also Charlotte Elizabeth Hobbs who died June 1951 aged 75 years. 'Blessed are the pure in Heart'. Also Ellen Hobbs died 18 May 1962 aged 80 years.

Joseph Hobbs - awarded OBE for work in Malaysia

Joe, as he was inevitably known, was a civil servant in the UK, was awarded an OBE, spent time in Malaysia in the rubber business, a bachelor, he supported his unmarried sisters, Sid (Charlotte) and Lil (Ellen) and was an executor of his Uncle Caleb Powell's will. He retired to Kilvalla House, Borrisokane."

Killavalla House was the home in the mid-nineteenth century of Captain Stoney. Captain Stoney was Robert Johnston Stoney, one of the Protestant gentry of the Borrisokane area. In the 1830's and 1840's he lived in Killavalla House, a short walk out from Borrisokane

Lewis records Killavalla as the seat of R. Johnston Stoney. The Ordnance Survey Name Books refer to the house in this townland as "Honeywood House, the residence of Robert Johnstone Stoney, very commodious with convenient offices attached". Stoney's representatives held the property valued at £16+ from the representatives of Stephen Egan at the time of Griffith's Valuation. It later became the seat of the Saunders family. This house no longer exists.

(Estate) Saunders (Killavalla) - This family originally settled at Saunder's Court, county Wexford in the mid 17th century. Later descendants lived at Newtown Saunders, county Wicklow and Largay, county Cavan. In 1799 Owen Saunders married Mary Anne daughter of Richard Sadleir of Sadleir's Wells, county Tipperary. Their second son Henry O. Saunders held two townlands in the parish of Borrisokane, county Tipperary in the mid 19th century. His sister was married to Thomas Sadleir of Castletown. In the 1870s Henry Saunders of Killavalla, Borrisokane, owned 1,052 acres in county Tipperary. In May 1877 part of the lands of Ballinderry (317 acres) including the house, the estate of Edward Saunders, was advertised for sale.
