MRS. ANN EGAN.
By the death of Mrs. Ann Egan, aged 92 years, relict of the late William Egan, of Gocup, the district loses one of the cherished ties that had linked up with its early history, her residence on the one farm extending over a period of 59 years.
Born in Ireland, where the young couple were married, she came to Sydney with her husband when only 23 years of age, so that she was a resident of the State for nearly 70 years. They went to Wollongong for about twelve months, then found their way to Adelong Crossing. Taking advantage of the provisions of the newly-enacted Robertson Land Act, which entitled the applicant for land to free selection, the late Mr.Egan took up an area on Gocup in 1863, and lived there till the end of his days, some 27 years ago, as also did the subject of our obituary. As prosperity smiled upon them they improved their holding, the rude wooden structure contituting their residence being substituted, as it fell into decay, by a palatial brick home, which stands as a monument of their own and their family's industry and thrift. The late Mrs. Egan possessed a remarkably robust constitution, and only during the last two years of her life did she manifest marked signs of old age affecting it. Gradually vitality waned, and senile decay eventually took control. Her daughter, Miss Margaret Egan, had passed away only a fortnight previous. There are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother, whose welfare of her children were her constant charge : William (Gunnedah), Mrs. Laurence Brennan (Sydney), Mrs. O. Hallinan (Cootamundra), (Michael (Tarcutta), Mrs. J. Hallinan (Cootamundra), Miss Norah (Gocup) and John (Snowball), all fine sturdy types of Australians. The remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the old cemetery, Tumut, on Tuesday afternoon, alongside those of her late husband, Rev. Fr. J. Sharkey, P.P., officiating at the grave, while Ald. H. W. Baker carried out the mortuary arrangements.
