Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1932) Sat 16 Sep 1893
THE LATE MR. W. EGAN.
One by one our old identities depart. Last Wednesday Mr. William Egan departed this life at
Erinvale, Gocup (near Gundagai), where he had lived a blameless, industrious life for the last 36 years. His age was 62 years. When the deceased first arrived in the colony he spent a little time in Wollongong, afterwards he came to Adelong Crossing, but finding a better opening in Tumut he settled there, and by persevering industry, business capacity, and strict integrity, he became an independent man, a pattern to many, and sincerely respected by all who knew him. He reared a large family, who are now well settled in life, and who have severally proved a credit and a comfort to their parents. His daughters were educated in the Albury convent, and his two youngest sons had the advantage of a college training at St. Joseph's, Hunter's Hill. His was one of those model homes where children are trained in habits of love, respect and obedience to their elders, hence the memory of the father is deeply revered. The grand old man died as he had lived, a fervent Catholic. Notwithstanding the rain many persons went out to Erinvale on the day of the funeral, and the large brick mansion deceased had reared was filled with those who came to pay their last tribute of respect. A long cortege followed the remains to the cemetery, where Rev. Fr. Slattery and Rev. Fr. Fallon read the burial prayers.
