Son of Thomas and Bridget Arrived in the colony in 1862 aged 5 years with his parents and siblings aboard "Lady Milton." Married Katherine Kelly in 1881 at Tumut with 10 children born of this union. The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 24 Feb 1925 MR. MICHAEL McGRATH. Another of the old pioneers in the person of Mr. Michael McGrath, of Tumut, passed away at his residence on Saturday morning, at the age of 72 years. With his parents,, deceased came to Australia 59 years ago and 12 months later arrived in the Tumut district. He engaged in farming and dairying all his life, first at Mondongo and about 10 years ago leased a 360-acre farm on Bombowlee belonging to the Lampe estate. He possessed no farming land of his own, but invested his savings in town properties, of which he owned seven, five having buildings erected thereon. With his good wife, who predeceased him, they reared a family of three daughters (Mrs. Bert Smith of Sydney, Mrs. J. Buckley of Tumut, Mrs. Wm. Barrett of Canberra) and six sons (James, Daniel and Jack of Sydney, Fred of Bombowlee and Thomas of Petfield). His mother, who has passed the century and lives at Adelong, was present at the bedside when death claimed him. Four brothers (Tom., Dan., Paddy and Jim) and two sisters (Miss Bridget of Adelong and Mrs. C. King of Tumut) also survive. The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Old Cemetery, Rev. Fr. McNeeve officiating at the graveside and Mr. H. W. Baker conducting the mortuary arrangements. |
