- Notes: Death of Mr. Thomas Henry Naughton
On Monday last at his residence in Merrivale St., Tumut, their passed away a well known townsman — Mr. Thomas Henry Naughton, at the comparative early, age of 42 years and 3 mos. The deceased was the son of Mrs. Naughton Senr., of Russell and Howick-Sts, and was a native of Tumut Plains. His first wife was a daughter of Mr. James Claffey, Gilmore, and on their marriage, they resided at Tumut Plains, where deceased followed farming pursuits. Two daughters were born of this union, both of whom survive their parents. About two years ago Mr. Naughton married Miss Dottie Downing, a daughter of Mrs. R. Downing, Star Hotel, Tumut, who also survives to mourn her loss. Up to a few months ago, the deceased did not appear to be very seriously ill, although his friends were aware there was something wrong with him. Dr. Mason concurred in the wishes of his wife and family, and Mr. Naughton went to Sydney for medical examination, going into a private hospital. On his return to Tumut some little while back, Mr. Naughton appeared to be in excellent spirits, and very sanguine as to his absolute cure of the ills that affected him. Even his friends were not altogether aware of the seriousness of his illness, until a few weeks back. Mr. Naughton, however, was very hopeful, and would remark 'I will be up all right for the Tumut races in October' but, L'homme propose, et Dieu dispose, and poor Mr. Naughton was forced to obey the call of the grim reaper. An upright honorable man; a loving husband and father; respected and loved by hosts of acquaintances, friends and relations, the promising life was cut short in the hey day of its fullness (sic), and we, with all that knew him are left to mourn. The funeral took place on Wednesday; numerous friends attending as a sorrowing mark of esteem. Mr. Jas. Elphick conducted the funeral in his usual decorous manner. The Rev. Father O'Farrell conducted the funeral obsequies. Wreaths were received from a large number of friends.
