MR. HUGH NAUGHTON One by one the identities of the old pioneering stock are passing out, the last one to join the Great Majority being Mr. Hugh Naughton of East Blowering, at the age of 84 years. Death came peacefully to him at 3.40 on Wednesday morning at his resid-ence. Deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Naughton of Bombowlee and Tumut Plains, two of the hardy toilers of the soil who in the very early days, by dint of good husbandry and the help of a large family, acquired considerable farming property in the Tumut district, each male member of the family following in their father's footsteps as tillers of mother earth, and they were trained in up-to-date methods of farming and animal husbandry based on a good educational grounding, and were ever eager to learn the improved methods as time went on, so that each and all made a pronounced success at the re-spective ventures. The subject of this obituary married, in 1897, Rose, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Leader of Blowering, and together at their farm on East Blowering they reared a family of ten children, nine of whom are living. The survivors are Tess: (Mrs. L. Pickles of Mascot), Gladstone and Anne (East Blowering), Ellen (Mrs. Frank Webb of Gocup), Patrick (Molong), Garner (Argalong), May (Mrs. Hampstead of Albury), George (Cunnamulla), Miriam (East Blowering). The other of the fam-ily, Mary, died in 1906. His wife predeceased him in 1933. Besides the family there is one brother Patrick S. of Gilmore), and two sisters (Mrs. McCarthy, and Mrs. O'Regan of Syd-ney) left to mourn their loss : other brothers predeceased him, including John and Walter. Deceased was of a jovial disposition,. the soul of integ-rity in all his business dealings and a good and agreeable neighbor. The casketed remains were taken to the Church of the Immaculate Conception and before the funeral left on Thurs-day afternoon for the Catholic portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, in the morning a Requiem Mass had been celebrated by Dean Sharkey and the resonant bell from the imposing tower dolefully tolled as the cortege moved off. Very Rev. Dean Sharkey per-formed the rites at the graveside, and Mr. C. A. Burt attended to the fune-ral and burial duties. The pall-bearers were four sons (Gladstone, Patrick, Garney and George) and Mes-srs. Frank Bourke and A. Halloran. The casket was bestrewn with floral tributes from His Family : Bourke family; Pat, Nellie and family : Aunt Ida and family: Tom and Lorna: Gar-ney, Daisy, and Bob; Alex Webb and Dave Herron : Mrs. Steve Elphick and family : Bill Foster; Alex Webb and family ; Charlie and Wally Banwell ; J. C. Johnson and family ; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Malone; Mr. and Mrs. F. Oddy and family ; Mr. and Mrs. Sym-mons and family : Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hargreaves and family ; Myra and Ted. Murphy and family; Blowering Public Hall ; Glee Bros. ; Emma, Peter and family. |
