OBITUARY MR. JAMES NAUGHTON As briefly stated in last issue, the death occurred as his residence, Gilmore Creek, on Wednesday last, of that fine old settler, Mr. James Naughton, at the age of 75 years, after an illness extending over a period of three months. The deceased was a native of the Tumut district, and a brother of Mr. Hugh Naughton, of East Blowering, Patrick of Gilmore, John of Tumut Plains, and Walter, Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. C. O'Regan, Sydney. He was a very fine type of a man, noted for his integrity and straight dealing, an agreeable neighbor and a valued friend. He was the son of the late Hugh Naughton and Bridget Naughton of Tumut Plains, and half a century ago bought "The Poplars," Gilmore, where he engaged in mixed fanning. He was fond of all kinds of sport, a redoubtable athlete and a keen cricket enthusiast, taking much interest in the game right up to near the time of his death. He was twice married, his first wife being Elizabeth Corbett, daughter of the late Edward Corbett, of Cornishtown, Adelong, and a sister of Mr. E. J. Corbett, of "Clear Hills," Yaven Creek. The family were Mrs Hayes (Ireland), Miss Lilian (Sydney), Aubrey, Hugh and Harold. The maiden name of the widow of the second marriage was Miss Louisa Stanfield of West Blowering, and the family are Mrs Hurley (Sydney), Mrs. Thos. Beattie and Mrs. Arthur Beattie (Gilmore), Miss Rita, James, Victor, Herbert and Thomas. All the children survive to mourn, with the widow, their great loss. The funeral took place on Thursday .last the burial being made in the Roman Catholic portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery, alongside the grave of his first wife. Rev. Fr. J. Sharkey, P.P. officiating, and Messrs Fuller and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.The casket bearers were James, Aubrey, Victor and Herbert (sons) and Thomas and Arthur Beattie (sons-in-law). The cortege was a very lengthy one, and numerous floral emblems covered the oaken casket, bearing tribute to the esteem in which the deceased was held.
