| - Notes: Francis Foord arrived in Sydney in 1839 and came to Tumut in 1843. His first employment was with Henry Bingham, the Commissioner for Crown Lands.
In 1847, with Francis Anderson and a man named Moon, they built the first bridge over the Tumut River, just above the present racecourse. Other men employed on the job were Henry Rockley, Charles Lee and William Ward. There was a toll charge - £1 for teams and 1/- for pedestrians and single animals. A nearby crossing was used when the river was low. In 1847 Francis Foord married Francis Anderson's daughter Martha Anderson. Shortly afterwards, in association with Moon, he built a flourmill driven by waterpower on the Gilmore Creek. Their sons were; >Henry Foord, >Charles Foord, >Francis Foord, >Edward Foord, >William Henry Foord, >Arthur Foord, >Percy Foord. and four daughters; >Miss Foord (married W. Tinnies), >Miss Foord (married a Mr. Groves), >Miss Foord (married J. Webb), >Eva Foord (married Charles Pember). When the first township was moved from the river flat at Mill Angle, Francis Foord was one of the first to purchase town allotments at the first auction sale of Crown Lands at Tumut in 1849. Until 1890 he camed on the business of a wheelwright and undertaker. Francis Foord died at Tumut on 31 December 1899aged 81 years. His wife died on 17 May 1887 aged 67 years. |

THE LATE MR. F. FOORD. The funeral of the late Mr. Francis Foord, sen.,took place on Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended by members of the family, relatives and friends. The place of interment was the Church of England portion of the Tumut cemetery. The Rev. T. E. Owens-Mell read the first part of the burial service at All Saints Church, where the remains were brought at the expressed wish of the widow, and the balance of the service was conducted at the grave. An announcement was made that a memorial sermon would be delivered at the church on Sunday evening, the 14th inst. Mr. W. Himsworth was in charge of the funeral arrangements, and carried the same out in his usual efficient manner. The cause of deceased's death was senile decay, perhaps accelerated by the oppressive weather. A few years ago the late Mr. Foord had an attack of paralysis, but the blessings of a sound constitution enabled him to ward it off. Dr. Mason, who attended him, said that if he had not had so vigorous and healthy a body, death would have claimed him long ere it did. The late Mr. Foord came to the colony in September, 1839. He first went to the Queanbeyan district, where he remained for four years. He was one of only two free men on Mr. Wright's station, the remainder being convicts, whose conduct made life none too pleasant amongst them. After leaving Queanbeyan he came over to Tumut, and entered into service with Mr. Commissioner Bingham, at Wolnogowah, now owned and occupied by Mrs. Ratcliffe. With a Mr. Moore he built the Gilmore mill, and afterwards, with the late Mr. Anderson, constructed the first bridge over the Tumut river, near the present race-course. In 1847 he married the daughter of the late Mr. Anderson, and settled down on a farm near the one now occupied by deceased's family. At this time no town was in existence, but the few residents of the place shortly afterwards made application to have a site surveyed. People then could only cross the river in a log canoe, owned by the late Mr. Rix. Being often inconvenienced they walked to the the bridge built by Messrs. Anderson and Foord. The late Mr. G. Shelley, however, intervened, and by his influence the builders were granted permission to purchase an area of land at either end of the bridge, thus giving them the sole access to it. Mr. Surveyor Lockhardt later on persuaded the Government to buy the bridge for the sum of £500. The land all round was owned by the Government at that time. Afterwards the late Mr. G. Shelley became possessed of Tumut Plains, and his brother William owned Bombowlee, whilst the late Mr. Vyner held Bogaledgore, in the vicinity of the residence until recently occupied by the family. A diversity of opinion existed as to whether the township site should be in the locality of Mundongo or where it is at present situated, the latter being chosen on the recommendation of the local surveyor. Mrs. Foord came with her father into the district in 1842. The oldest surviving inhabitants of the district are Mr. James Day, Mrs. Anderson, and Mrs. Percival. Mr. Foord bought several blocks of land in town, and carried on business as a wheelwright and undertaker up till about 10 years ago, when he retired to his wife's property at Bombowlee, and devoted himself more closely to farming pursuits. The deceased was quiet and unostentatious in his manner, was most domesticated in his habits, and was unapproachable in his attachment for his life's partner, home ever being his chief consideration. This is exemplified in the fact that his widow computes that the combined length of his absences from home during a period of 52 years would not extend over a fortnight. He was over zealous and active in church affairs, and was a church warden for many years. He was clerk of works for the erection of the nave at All Saints' Church, which was the portion first built. The deceased leaves a large family; the majority of whom are settled in the district. The sons are — Henry (now in New Guinea), Charles, Francis, Edward, William Henry (who has managed his father's affairs for some time past), Arthur (articled to a firm of solicitors in West Australia), and Percy. The daughters are — Mrs. F. W. Timmis (whose husband is postmaster at Gunning), Mrs. G. Groves (Newtown, Sydney), Mrs. J. Webb (Bombowlee), and Miss Eve Foord.
