OBITUARY MR. WILLIAM HENRY FOORD Death came as a happy release to that giant (in deeds if not in stat ure) of pioneers and noble citizen, Mr. William Henry Foord, of Bom bowlee, at 12.45 on Sunday morn ing, at the Tumut and District Hos pital, where he had been a patient for three months, death being due to high blood-pressure and heart af fection. He was 73 years of age, into which was crammed two ordin ary lifetimes of knowledge and en ergy. Deceased was one of the most outstanding of rural and citizen stalwarts. Possessed of unbounded energy and of marked progressive views he ventured on many preten tious undertakings on the contem plation of which thousands of others would have quailed. In every mo vement for the welfare and advance ment of the community he made his personality and advocacy felt, and no task was too formidable for him to essay and none he tackled was left unsurmounted. Once he con ceived a scheme he was never con tented until he had propounded it to the public bodies interested and then listened to comments and criticism. A foremost tiller of the soil and well versed in all walks of husbandry, he produced against all competitors, particularly in horti culture. His forte was as a member, committeeman and official of the Tumut Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and as his elders went out of office he and others filled their places. He was for years the leader and president. The most ardent of all workers, he performed herculean tasks in the preparation and display of the District Trophies at successive Shows, and the trium phal arch, the layout and construc tion of which he designed and su pervised in Wynyard-st., on the occasion of Tumut's centenary cele brations, was a work of art as well as beinf an impressive symbol. Prominent on all occasions as an exhibitor at the annual Shows, he carried off honors year after year, and when, through advancing years and growing physical disabilities, he was forced, in his turn, to resign his charge in active service to a youn ger generation, it was a difficult task to find an efficient successor. In his early days he was an influential member of the lapsed Tumut Branch of the Farmers and Settlers' Associ ation, which in those days did yeo man service for agricultural and pastoral interests. He was one of the foundation members of the Sons of Temperance Lodge and a fine example to his fellows in adhering to the tenets of that order. A. devoted churchman, he occupied positions on the Parochial Council of All Saints' Church and was one of its human pillars. And the veil in the early hours of Sunday morning closed a noble, useful and admired career. The community mourn with his re latives in their irreparable loss; but his deeds will ever remain in the memory of all those with whom he worked and mingled. Deceased was the 5th son of the late Francis Foord, one of the very earliest settlers in the Tumut Val ley. In the early part of his career he purchased from the Foord Estate the farm on which he was born and reared and where he resided thro ughout his life. Forty-six years ago he married Miss Princella Godfrey, daughter of the late George God frey sr., of Gocup, and sister of Shire President Harry Godfrey. To the union there were eight children — six daughters and two sons — all living. The daughters are Isabel (Mrs. S. Brown of Sydney), (Elsie (Mrs. Alan Munt of Dederang, Vic.), Daisy (Mrs. R. J. French of Kurrajong), Nellie (Mrs. R. E. Wright of Muswellbrook), Amy (Mrs. P. Parkes of Murrahit, Vic.) and Ivy (Mrs. Norman Nicoll of Sydney) ; and the sons Harry and Frank of Bombowlee. Besides these there are the sorrowing widow, two sisters (Mrs. C. Pember of Sydney and Mrs. Ethel Webb of Tumut), one brother (Mr. Percy Foord, of Beckham), and 14 grandchildren, to lament the demise of a devoted hus band, indulgent yet firm father, a loyal brother, and a loved grand father. Vale, William! All his family, with the exception of Mrs. Brown, were present at the funeral on Sunday afternoon. Al though it was a long cortege which followed the casketed remains to their last resting place in the C. of E. portion of the New Cemetery, the news of his death had not rea ched the countryside to enable his legion of friends and admirers there to attend or to send tributes to his revered memory. Rev. S. Broadfoot performed the rites at the graveside and Messrs W. H. Fuller and Son directed the funeral and burial. The pallbearers were Messrs Harry and Frank Foord (sons), Trevor Foord, Neville Munt (grandsons), Alan Munt (son-in-law) and Chas. Pem ber (brother-in-law). The following is a list of the floral tributes laid on the casket:— Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Johnson, the Gibson Family, Mr. and Mrs. Ern. Ander son; Harry, Gertie and Ron; Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Godfrey (Muswell brook), Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Har greaves, Mr. W. Hayward, Matron and Staff Tumut District Hospital; Eva and Charlie; W. H. Fuller and Son; Dorothy, Jean and Len; Mr. and Mrs. H. Godfrey; Bob and An nie; Ethel, Ruby and Phyllis; Mr. and Mrs. W. Cribb; Mr. and Mrs. Harris and family; Frank, Zillah and baby Fay; Mr. and Mrs. T.
