Son of Thomas The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 22 Feb 1910 Cause of death ; Senile Decay and Bladder problems Arrived in the colony at Victoria in 1851 at the time of the Turong diggings with his wife and daughter. After 2 years they made there way to Bathurst New South Wales and worked for Mr. D. McKinnon aka "Bathurst McKinnon". Whilst there he took part in one of the first ploughing matches at Bathurst, borrowed a pair of horses out of a neighbor's team, fixed up a plough and won the champion ploughing match. Mr McKinnon wanted a man for his Tumut River property at Brungle (now leased by Mr A. B. Triggs), and he sent Mr Godfrey there. He built the first house upon the estate and effected many improvements that are still standing. He worked there for two years, and coming to Gocup, bought from a Mr Finley 100 acres of a possession that at the time spoken of was little more than on open swamp, a marshy reed bed looked upon more as a travelling teamster's camp. Little by little, he introduced a system of drainage which proved effective. Digging deep drains he placed in them a number of poles, filled in the openings and in addition had reticulation drains of the same character. The result was the water impounded in the hither to morass, got more quickly away and after a time our pioneer reaped the reward of probably the most fertile land in Gocup. During 40 years he worked there assiduously, was one of the principal exhibitors at the shows in the early days, was a frequent winner at our ploughing matches, and took part in years' competitions for the model farm State prize. He divided the first prize with Mr J. H. Worboys, of Spring Hill (eight miles from Orange), for the first year, and secured first prize the second year. In the meantime, he had added 200 acres to his holding. About 10 years ago he was afflicted with bladder trouble. Not feeling well he took a trip to the old country, visited his old home, saw all his people, and on returning Dr Mason found it necessary to send him to Sydney to under go an operation, which was performed by Dr McCormack, who removed two stones from his bladder. For a couple of years after that he enjoyed very fair health, and had retired, giving up the entire management to his son Henry of the farm. In later years his old trouble revived. Dr McCormock prescribed for him, but could only give him temporary relief, and the complaint being gradually aggravated, developed into a chronic state. For the last three months the distressed patient was confined to his bed, and was constantly attended to and prescribed for by Dr Mason, who afforded him much relief from his suffering. During the last week his appetite disappeared, and he gradually sank, expiring at 3 p.m on Friday last. He leaves behind six daughters, viz : Mrs E Davis (Happy Valley, Parkes, who was attending at his bedside for a week prior to his death), Mrs Frank Foord (Turnut), Mrs. McDonald (Wellington), Mrs W. H. Foord (Bombowlee) Mrs W. Hayward (Bombowlee), Mrs George Gibson (Grahamstown) ; and two sons, Geo.(Tumut) and Henry (Gocup), to mourn the loss of a kind, considerate, deeply affectionate and worthy father, whose life was centered in his children's welfare. His remains were followed to the Church of England portion of the old cemetery on Saturday last by a large and sympathising cortege of mourners. Rev W D Kennedy officiated at the grave, and Mr W H Hoad was the undertaker. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest solicitude in this, their hour of darkest grief. |
