JOHANNA FRENCH nee Kilev
by Lyn Shiels Johanna was born in 1844, daughter of William Kiley and Margaret Kiley nee Russell. Her parents had arrived in Australia in 1839 from County Cork, lreland on the Navarine. ln 1848 William took up a fourteen year lease on Spring Creek and Johanna's childhood was spent there with her brothers and sister. At the age of nineteen Johanna married Henry French, son of Daniel and lsabella French and together they built a life for their family of ten children on Bullawayarra near Brungle. Most of Johanna's children lived well into old age but the family experienced tragedy when Johanna's nine year old daughter, also named Johanna, was killed in a fall from a horse in 1890 and a few years later she was to lose two small grand daughters in a similar accident. Many of Johanna's descendants still live in the Tumut area. Johanna died in 1913. She is buried in the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery with her daughter and her parents. |
