DEATH OF MRS M. S. DOWNING
A gloom, as of a leaden pall, was cast over the town when the mournful intelligence was bruited about that Mrs. Downing, the beloved wife of our popular townsman, Mr. M. S. Downing, had, at the early age of 43 years, passed beyond the veil of Time, at the Tumut Cottage Hospital on Tuesday morning last at 12.20 o'clock. The cause of death is attributed primarily to cellulitis of the arm, and pyaemia as a secondary cause. Seldom, if ever, has such a troublesome case come under our purview in Tumut, sad from every point of view. A simple slip of a carving fork between the finger and the thumb of the right hand, at her residence 5 weeks ago, caused blood poisoning and Dr.Browne was called in and prescribed for her. About a week later Dr.Mason visited her and advised her admission to the Tumut Cottage Hospital. The inflammation not abating, the doctors consulted and decided, as a last resource, on the amputation of her right arm. This was carried into effect on 28th July. The poor sufferer experienced excruciating pain at intervals, with occasional respite therefrom, till after about a fortnight's lingering, when a rift appeared for a time in the dark overhanging clouds.
The subject of our obituary was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel Pembrook, of Yass, was a clever, highly educuted, intelligent woman, a splendid musician, whom to know was to respect and admire. Whilst filling the position of governess at Mr C S Byrne's home at ''Bushy Park,"
Bombowlee Creek, she met her husband, and they were married at Mr Byrne's residence about 16 years ago, by the Rev Father Grey. The result of the union was six girls and four boys, the eldest being 14 years of age, the youngest (a son) 4 months. The eldest son died, and 9 children survive their mother.
