OBITUARY
MR. MICHAEL JOSEPH DOWNING
Yet another of the Tumut district natives and old identities passed to that bourne whence no travelled returns when Mr. Michael Joseph Downing, of Simpson-st., Tumut, breathed his last in the Tumut and District Hospital at 2.55 on Sunday afternoon, at the ripe age of 85 years. Deceased, who had a remarkably robust constitution and up till two or three years ago enjoyed excellent health, contracted erycipelas about three weeks ago and entered hospital for treatment, and although everything that could be done for him by medical skill and careful nursing was done he gradually faded out and had a peaceful end. The gravest fears were entertained for his recovery from the inception and members of the family took it in turns to watch beside his bed, Miss Mary, one of his daughters, being the only one present at his demise, although all the surviving members of the family excepting son Robert were in and out of hospital doing their part throughout his illness. The subject of this obituary was the third son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Downing sr., of Gadara. Sixty-two years ago he married Miss Elizabeth Cassidy, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cassidy, of Wagragobilly. The surviving family are Frederick James, Mrs. Jas. Emery (Maggie), Miss Mary, Robert W., Matthew, Mrs. E. Welsh, of Dubbo (Elizabeth, "Lil."). Mrs. S. McGuigan (Edith May), Michael Joseph ("Dixie"), and three in infancy, besides his wife, predeceased him. Mrs. J. McDonald (Maggie), Mrs. Johanna Nash (Adelong), Mrs. W. Thom (Nellie), sisters, and Messrs. Charles and Frederick S. Downing, brothers, survive; Mrs. Jas. Thom (Katie), Mrs. J. Sheahan (Mary Ann), and Messrs. John, Tom, Robert and Matthew S., sisters and brothers, having all passed the Rubicon. The late Mr. Downing was connected with live stock and grazing all his life, and in the early days took charge of droving camps which brought large mobs of cattle from the far north of Queensland and outback to interstate markets. In the last thirteen years he was local poundkeeper and took on odd jobs at droving. It was only a couple of days before he took ill on the last occasion that he was seen astride his horse, with stock whip over his arm, showing hardihood right up till the last. Michael was a genial old man and was a familiar figure in Tumut, respected by all with whom he became acquainted. Deep sympathy is felt for the bereaved. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the plot reserved by his parents in the Catholic portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery, Rev. Fr. O'Carroll, who officiated at the graveside, having also conducted a short service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception previously. Mr. H. W. Baker efficiently carried out the mortuary duties.

Thom (Nellie), sisters, and Messrs. Charles and Frederick S. Downing, brothers, survive; Mrs. Jas. Thom (Katie), Mrs. J. Sheahan (Mary Ann), and Messrs. John, Tom, Robert and Matthew S., sisters and brothers, having all passed the Rubicon.
The late Mr. Downing was connected with live stock and grazing all his life, and in the early days took charge of droving camps which brought large mobs of cattle from the far north of Queensland and outback to interstate markets. In the last thirteen years he was local pound keeper and took on odd jobs at droving. It was only a couple of days before he took ill on the last occasion that he was seen astride his horse, with stock whip over his arm, showing hardihood right up till the last. Michael was a genial old man and was a familiar figure in Tumut, respected by all with whom he became acquainted. Deep sympathy is felt for the bereaved.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the plot reserved by his parents in the Catholic portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery, Rev. Fr. O'Carroll, who officiated at the graveside, having also conducted a short service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception previously. Mr. H. W. Baker efficiently carried out the mortuary duties.
