MR. M. S. DOWNING
Tumut received a shock on Tuesday evening when the news was circulated that Mr. Matthew Silvester Downing, one of Tumut 's most highly esteemed citizens had died, suddenly at his home in Capper street, Tumut. He had attended the stock sale of Dalgety and Co. Ltd. at the Tumut Sale Yards on Tuesday. He then appeared to be in excellent health. On arrival at his home from the sale, he sat on a chair and said that he felt tired from the exertions of the day. His wife took him a drink, and left the room for a moment. He must have collapsed suddenly, as when she returned he was dead. Mr. Downing had not complained of being unwell, and went about his business in a carefree and jovial manner. He was the first son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Downing, of 'Rosebank' and 'Killarney,' near Tumut, and was 67 years of age. He was born at 'Rosebank,' and lived all his life in the district. About 35 years ago he purchased a butchery business from Mr. B. P. Donaldson, who was elected to Parliament. Mr. Downing had carried on the business ever since. He was an excellent judge of stock, in which he dealt extensively. He had been a member of several public bodies, but of late years confined his attention to the Tumut Turf Club, and raced several horses. Mr. Downing seldom missed the A. J.C. Doncaster meeting and the Royal Show, and it was his intention to leave yesterday for Sydney. He was one of the most genial residents of the town, known and liked by everyone. He was a staunch friend to all, and profound regret was felt at his death. The deceased was twice married. In 1894 he married Miss Lillian Pembroke, of Yass, and by the union there were 10 children, eight of whom survive — Allan J., Matthew S., and Patrick of Tumut; Dorothy, Peggy (Mrs. W. Moore, England), Kathleen (Mrs. B. Cook, Tumut), and Misses Josie and Gertie. Robert and Maurice predeceased him, and Mrs. Downing died in 1910. The brothers and sisters surviving are Michael, Charles, Frederick, of Tumut; Mrs. Sheehan, of Jugiong; Mrs. J. MacDonald, of Albury; Mrs. J. Thorn, of Temora: Mrs. W. Thom, of Waverley; and Mrs. J. M. Nash, of Adelong. Thomas and John predeceased him. In 1927 Mr. Downing married Miss Kathleen Fennell, of Tumut, who survives him. The funeral, which was one of the largest seen at Tumut for a considerable time, took place yesterday afternoon in the Catholic portion of the Tumut cemetery. The Rev. Dean Sharkey officiated at the graveside. There were many floral tributes.
