Born at Cornwallis, NSW.
Daughter of Simon and Mary A Freebody. Wife of Daniel Search. OBITUARY Another of the links which bind us to the irrevocable past has been snapped, for death has taken one who for close upon a century has lived in the Hawkesbury district, and who has been a familiar figure to each succeeding generation. Regarding the exact age of the late Mrs. Mary Ann Search, who died at Bosworth Street, Richmond, at 6 a.m. on Saturday last, there are conflicting statements. According to her own testimony she was born at Cornwallis on Boxing Day in the year 1799. Thus, at the time of her death she would be in her 100th year. Her surviving relatives also claim that she had passed her 99th year, and presumably their impressions were received from the old lady herself, who in 1897 informed a reporter from this office that she was born in the year given above. But there is reason to believe that she was born two years later. The Rev. J. Howell Price, rector of St. Peter's, Richmond, is in possession of definite information which throws some light on the subject of her age. He states that the late Mrs Search was 97 in December last, and this version may be accepted as authentic. But there is no question that she was a native of the Hawkesbury. She knew all about Windsor and Richmond, and, possessing a retentive memory, some of the stirring incidents of the early settlement of the Hawkesbury were, up to within a few months of her death, as fresh upon her mind as though they occurred but twelve months ago. For many years the deceased had lived in Richmond with her unmarried daughter, Charlotte. Six months ago Mrs. Search was a hale and hearty woman, and in full possession of all her faculties. Á little later there appeared premonitions of a general collapse, and she gradually became weaker until life ebbed away. According to her own statement, she married at the age of 20. She survived her husband some 60 years. Of the issue of the marriage little is known concerning the majority. Among her long list of direct descendants are 4 daughters and one son : Mrs. Stranger (who was twice married and is better known in Richmond as Mrs Kelly), born January 16, 1823; Daniel Search (born in 1830) ; Charlotte Search (born December 4, 1834) ; Annie Search (born in 1838) ; Mary Ann Search (date of birth not known). The relatives present at the funeral were : Miss Charlotte Search, Mrs. Douglass, from Sydney, and a grand-niece from Windsor (a daughter of the late Mr. William Holland). The burial took place on Monday afternoon. At the graveside a short address touching upon the life of the deceased was delivered by the Rev. J. Howell Price, rural dean. The remains were interred beside those of a niece, this spot having been chosen by the deceased as her last resting place. Before she became bed ridden Mrs. Search was in the habit of making frequent visits to the cemetery, and often pointed out to friends the piece of ground where she intended that she should be buried. The funeral was attended by a number of townspeople, and Mr. Arthur Price carried out the arrangements. We understand that the Rector of St. Peter's Church is collecting some facts concerning the life of Mrs. Search, and will refer to them on Sunday. The following reference to the late Mrs. Search appeared in the GAZETTE Christmas issue of 1897 : " Mrs Search was born at Cornwallis, near Windsor, on December 26th, 1799, Her maiden name was Freebody, her father, Simon Freebody, being the owner of land adjoining Mr J Upton's farm at Cornwallis. He died at the age of 103, his remains being interred in St Matthew's Church of England Cemetery. The husband of Mrs Search was named Daniel ; he was a native of England, and married at the age of 21 (his bride being 20). but at 50 died in Sydney Hospital from the effects of a critical operation. He was a carpenter by trade, and did most of the joining work in connection with St Matthew's (Windsor) and St Peter's (Richmond), residing on land then owned by him, and now the site of the Windsor Wesleyan Sunday school. Mrs Search witnessed the funeral of Mr Andrew Thompson, JP, a prominent , Windsor figure in the early part of this century, and a close friend of Governor Macquarie. Though she has gone far beyond the limits of the three-score-and-ten, which we are assured is a very reasonable age to attain, Mrs Search is much more active than the average woman of 50, and her mind is even more vigorous than her body. Strange incidents the old lady witnessed in the early days - when British soldiers occupied Windsor Barracks, and men in broad arrow marked garments formed a large proportion of the population ; when traffic between the Hawkesbury and the Metropolis was carried on by teams ; when the horrors of " the System" were perpetrated day after day with such unerring regularity that even the softest-hearted amongst the people began to grow callous and indifferent. Mrs Search was the mother of 14 children ; two of her family are married, and are living in N S W., whilst a third, a single daughter aged 62, is residing with her at her residence in Bosworth Street, Richmond. The whereabouts of the fourth, Mr Ham Search (or Freebody, which is the name he is known by) was disclosed through the medium of a paragraph which appeared in the GAZETTE some consider- able time since, and which was copied by a number of provincial papers-eventually finding its way into a Victorian journal, where it caught the eye of the gentleman named. He immediate- ly wrote to his mother, and acquainted her of the fact that he was still in the land of the living, being a farmer in a good way of business at Sale (Victoria). Mrs Search's descendants are legion, and comprise an almost unlimited number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren. She reads with ease, and oftentimes without the aid of spectacles, sews readily, and walks to old St Peter's on Sundays to take part in the service."
