Father Owned Station Here 71 Years Ago

A link with the Narrandera district 70 odd years ago was servered by the death in Sydney on 27th May of Mr. Frederick. Robert Holloway. Mr. Holloway's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Holloway, owned Mumbledool Station, near Barellan, from 1870' to 1890. when it was purchased by & company, Mr. George Gow was appointed manager of the Mumbledool property for the com pany and he remained in that cap acity until the station was subdivided for closer settlement in 1911-12. Mr. Gow was formerly manager of Murrlill Creek Station, near Ard lethan. After the subdivision and sale of Mumbledool, Mr. Gow purchased his own property, 'Hughenden,' Barellan. where he remained until he re tired some years ago and made his home in Griffith. In those early days the town ships of Barellan and Ardlethan were not in existence, and Narrandera was the centre for the pioneers. Wild life — kangaroos,* emus, mallee hens, brush turkeys, and even wild horses — were plentiful -in the then sparsely settled district In his reminiscences of Narrandera district pioneers, published In the Jubilee issue of the ''Argus' on 20th April, 1935, Mr. Gow said of Mumbledool and Mr. John Holloway: 'Few people of to-day realise the great fight the settlers put up in sub duing the timber and conserving water. It was a lone and costly struggle, extending well into the pre sent century. Originally this tract of counry did not have many wild ani mals, but as the land, after the de traction of the timber, grew more grass, and water was conserved, there was a rapid increase in the numbers of kangaroos, emus, dingos, wild horses and cattle. They levied a heavy toll on the supplies of water and grass, but, while many men earned their living by shooting and trap ping them, it first seemed as though the task was hopeless. However, necessity usually produces some outstanding man, and Mr. John Holloway, who at that time owned Mumbledool Station, consist ing of 60,000 acres, introduced poison pollard baits. At first these were distributed by hand, but soon he am his sons invented the first poisoned pollard distributing machine, which enabled large areas to be covered quickly. The baits were automatically cut and dropped in a small trail or furrow made by the machine as it moved along. The trails of fresh earth, placed at intervals through the paddocks, attracted the rabbits to the poison baits, which they took best when the grass was green. The pro blem of rabbit destruction was not really solved till closer settlement, and the digging-out of the rabbit bur rows took place. By destroying large numbers before the breeding season, the poison carts helped to keek the plague partly under control and it was the first serious check and help ed to stem the tide. 'It is forgotten now if Mr. Hollo way was the first man to use phos phorated pollard, but it may be stated definitely that he introduced it to the district, invented the mach ine to spread the bait easily and cheaply, and its use soon became very general. 'While speaking of rabbits, it is not out of place to mention that the first netting fences were erected too low and the mesh was too large. Before complete control was accom plished fences of a better standard had to replace the first lot. The whole thing was very costly any many men were ruined by the rabbits in New South Wales. Rabbits caused grass shortages in what should have been good, or fail1, seasons, resulting in netting fences erected in this district great stock losses. Of the first netting fences erected in this district, it is interesting to note that thet the netting, both above and below the ground, is still sound.' Like his father, Mr. Frederick Holloway was a familiar figure in Narandera. Old residents will remember the auctioneering firm of Holloway and Armstrong, which he and the late Mr. James Armstrong conducted in East Street for some years. After the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Fred Holloway moved to Queensland to manage a pastoral property for Dr. Hinder. Some years after the death of Dr. Hinder, Mr. Holloway married Mrs. Hinder, who survives him. He is also survived bv two sisters, Florence and Eva (Mrs. Davidson), and one brother, Dr. Spencer Holloway, of Sydney.
