Queensland Country Life 20 April 1950
INTERESTING VISITOR ENJOYING a tranquil holiday in her native Queensland after 18 years of travel and excitement (sometimes unwelcome) is "Elizabeth Antill," whose first detective novel "Murder in Mid-Atlantic" appears shortly in England. The publishers who are already clamouring for a second book, will probably receive a story with an Australian setting. "Elizabeth Antill" is the non-de plume of Mrs. Middleton, wife of British Foreign Office Councillor George Middleton, and great grand-daughter of Major Henry Henry Colden Antill, A.D.C. to Governor Lachlan Macquarie in early N.S. Wales days. Born Elizabeth Pockley at Roma Downs, Queensland, she was edu cated at N.E.G.S., Armidale. Her father, the late H. R. Pockley, lived at Roma Downs for many years and also owned Struan and Deep water in that district; he was a committeeman in the early days of the Queensland Graziers' Associa tion, and a leading identity in BAWRA during World War 1. His wife was a sister of Mr. U. E. Parry-Okeden, D'Aguilar, and Mrs. Middleton thus traces her ancestry on both sides back to prominent families. John Antill, composer of "Corroboree," is a cousin. The undaunted spirit of her grandmother, Selina Antill (nee Pockley), who lived to 93, must have been inherited by Mrs. Mid dleton. Since her marriage in South America to George Middle ton (whom she met in Switzer land), she has lived in Argentina, Paraguay, U.S.A., Poland, Rumania, Transylvania, France, England, Italy and Madeira, twice losing all she possessed; her husband was reported "missing believed killed" during the invasion of Poland in 1939, and was later an Italian prisoner-of-war until exchanged. Mrs. Middleton did good work in Madeira as liaison officer lor Gibraltar's evacuees, and in help ing the hospitalised victims of enemy submarines. Divorced 22/10/1971 |

Many Queenslanders will remember Elizabeth Rosalie Oakden Pockley, daughter of the late Mr. Harry Richardson Pockley and Mrs. Pockley, of this State, whose marriage to Mr. George Humphrey Mlddleton, British Vice-Counsul at Buenos Ayres (where the marriage was solemnised), and son of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Middleton, of Paris, was celebrated hi the latter part of last year. Mr. and Mrs. Middleton spent their honeymoon at Cruz Chica hi the Cordoba Hills, where they played golf and made excursions in picturesque and beautiful surroundings at an elevation of over 4,000 ft. After their return to Buenos Ayres Mr. Middleton was transferred to Paraguay, where for the next two or three years their home will be about 1,000 miles up the river Paraguay from Asuncion. |
