Mr. N. Blomfield Brown, a plantation manager of Hawaii, accompanied by Mrs. and Miss B. Blomfield Brown, is a passenger for Colombo by the Orama, which will pass through Fremantle today. Northern Star (Lismore) 10 July 1923 PINEAPPLE FIELD LARGEST IN THE WORLD GEELONG, Monday - To manage what promises to be the largest pineapple plantation in the world is the position accepted by Mr,. Harold Blomfield Brown, son of the late Mr. H. Bloomfield Brown, one of Geelong's leading citizens, who died a few months ago. This plantation will be in the Hawaiian group on the Island of Lanai. The company to which he is attached had purchased the island and it will be his duty to convert it from a cattle ranch to a 100,000 acre plantation. Mr. Brown said it would be the largest pineapple plantation the world had known. Geelong Advertiser 22 June 1923 Pineapples in Hawaii From Oahu, Hawaii, Mr Neil Campbell has received an interesting letter from Mr Harold- Blomfield Brown. The writer, after referring to the death of his father, says: 'I have just been offered a very excellent position by my company and have accepted it. My company quite recently bought the Island of Lanai, of this group, and I am going over there to turn it from a cattle ranch into the largest pineapple plantation the world will ever have, I expect. We have one hundred thousand acres there. I have seen this business grow from a babe into a very big thing. We have the largest fruit cannery in the world, you know, now, and when we get this Island producing we will have to double the size of the cannery we now have. We pack over 1,750,000 cases this year and in a few years we will pack over 5,000,000 case. Each case contains two dozen cans of canned pineapples. It will mean a turnover all of twenty five million pounds and we expect to net a profit of a million pounds sterling. This island I am going to very soon is one of the loveliest spots I have ever seen in my life. The climate is more than excellent and although out of civilisation in a way, life will be very pleasant there. I took the wife over there a week ago before accepting, and she is in love with it as much as myself. We are about 75 miles from the Island of Oahu where Honolulu is situated. We will ship our pineapples in our own ships to our cannery there. |
