The Daylesford Herald's 6th December, 1899 report of Dinah's death
Some journalistic inaccuracies are evident when this account is compared to the Magisterial Inquiry.
Deputy Coroner Sainsbury found that Dinah died on 4th December. He heard during his Inquiry that the instrument used was a small pocket knife.

Transcript of Deputy Coroner Sainsbury, inquiring into Dinah's death in Dec 1899
"A MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY on behalf of Our Sovereign Lady the Queen. Taken at Smiths Creek Daylesford in the Midland Bailiwick of Victoria, this Seventh day of December in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine before the undersigned Henry H Sainsbury Esquire, one of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said Bailiwick, upon view of the body of Diana Trisise then and there lying dead.
Having duly inquired when, where, how, and by what means the said Diana Tresise came by her death, I say that the said Diana Tresise died at Daylesford in the said Bailiwick on the Fourth day of December 1899 from a wound in the throat – self-inflicted – whilst temporaly insane
As witness my hand this Seventh day of December 1899

The Daylesford Herald's 26th June, 1903 report of Richard's death. The report accounts only three surviving children.
The newspaper may not have been aware of daughter Mary Catherine, 37, married to John Henry Webb and probably living in Queensland. The children of whom it was aware most likely were
Ellen (Ella) Maude, 44, married to Joseph Patrick Hanley and living in Melbourne,
William Wallis, 43, married to Annie Rosina Silbereisen and living in Tasmania, and, of course,
Jane Ann, 35, married to William John Smith and living in nearby Leitche's Creek.
"Another old resident in the person of Mr. Richard Tresise, of Smith's Creek, died yesterday at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr.W.J.Smith, Leitche's Creek. Mr Tresise was associated with mining pursuits in his earlier career here, and followed his avocation of a blacksmith in connection with the mines. The deceased leaves two daughters and one son, as far as we are aware. The interment will take place this morning."
Personal Notes:

First family Richard and Dinah TRESISE (nee POLLARD), with one child, arrived in Australia on 5th December 1848. They spent two or three years in South Australia, Richard's blacksmithing skills undoubtedly in demand by his fellow Cornishmen in the copper mines at places like Kapunda and Burra. Ultimately, having joined the rush for gold in Victoria, Richard and Dinah settled at Smith's Creek, which adjoined the then fledgling township of Daylesford. It seems likely, however, that the TRESISE family spent up to eight years at Mt Egerton (aka Egerton), near Ballarat, before arriving at Smith's Creek.

In the immediate vicinity of Smith's Creek, at Cornish Hill, Daylesford's large Cornish reef mines commenced operation in 1863/64, although smaller mining enterprises had been active in the locality during the decade before this. The rapid and productive growth of the Daylesford community in the 1860's would have been a phenomenon well known to the thirty-somethings Richard and Dinah.

On 30th July, 1872, Richard purchased, for ten pounds, a 0.2-hectare block of Crown land on the western side of today's East Street between Macadam and Sullivan Streets, on the south-eastern outskirts of Daylesford. In the mid-1880's the TRESISE family lived in an eight metre square dwelling on the high side of the block, set approximately forty metres back from the East Street frontage. There were two very small outbuildings as well.

Very few of Richard and Dinah TRESISE's fourteen offspring survived baby/childhood. It appears that the only children who grew to adulthood were Evangeline (born c1855), Ellen Maude (born c1859), William Wallis (born c1860), Mary Catherine (born 1866) and Jane Ann (born 1867).

http://martynsmith.info/famweb/children.htm
Sections of the 31st January, 1863 and the 18th November, 1867 birth registrations of babies Dinah and Jane Tresise respectively
(Note: Dinah was born on 8th January, 1863 and Jane on 7th October, 1867 - both at "Smith's Creek".
These records illustrate the tragic loss of life of the earliest Tresise offspring as the family found its way in Australia.
Just 36 in early 1863 and finally settled at Smith's Creek, mother Dinah had lost five of her children. By late 1867, three more had died.
Also shown here is father Richard's signature and mistaken information on baby Dinah's registration regarding the date of his marriage to Dinah. (The correct date, according to the International Genealogical Index, is 7th November, 1847 - in Madron, Cornwall.)
It appears that a similar error was made on baby Jane's registration, but was corrected.
