OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN STEWART.
The death of Mr. John Stewart,
a native of Williamstown, took
place at Thornbury on Saturday,
7th inst., after a short illness, at
the age of 64 years. Until re
cently, Mr. Stewart had lived here,
and was familiarly known in rail-
way circles as a skilful steam crane
driver, having driven the first
steam crane at the old loco. works
near the piers, .and later at the
Newport Workshops, until his re-
tirenient, four and a half years
back. In conversation with a re-
tired railway officer, our repre-
sentative was informed that Mr.
Stewart's skill and experience
with steam cranes were very help-
ful in connection with casualty
break-down work, and the removal
of old bridges and the erection of
new bridges, necessarily carried
out at night time, in a very limited
time, between trains on Saturday
nights and Sunday mornings.
Deceased leaves a widow and three
daughters, one of whom is the
wife of Mr. R. Stone.
The funeral took place at the
local cemetery on Monday, when
a representative gathering of
townsmen and railwaymen at-
tended. The Rev. J. E. Higgin-
botham conducted the service at
the graveside, and the funeral ar-
rangements were carried out by
Mr. E. Jackson.. The pall-bearers
were Messrs. R. Ferguson, J.
Taylor, S. Butterfield, F. Raymer,
J. Cameron, W. Henderson, E.
Sanderson and F. Clarke.
