MURDER CHARGE; POLGLASS FURTHER REMANDED Stanley Eric Polglass, who appeared before Mr. P. M. Hishon, P.M., yesterday, charged with having wilfully murdered his wife, Cora Zuill Polglass, at Brisbane, on August 8, was further remanded for a week, on the application of Detective Senior Sergeant F. B. Kearney. Cairns Post 21 Aug 1934 POLGLASS CASE. JURY DISAGREES. BRISBANE, August 20. The jury in the Polglass case-re- tired at 5 p.m. to-day and returned to the court after five hours deliberation, when they announced that they were unable to reach an agreement. The Jury was discharged, and the accused was remanded till the September sittings of the Criminal Court. Cairns Post 10 Feb 1938 FOUND UNDER TRUCK. JACKSON'S DEATH. WIFE DISBELIEVES SUICIDE THEORY. BRISBANE, February 9. At the inquest into the death of Stanford Jackson, formerly Polglass (38), who was found dead under a utility truck at Palm Beach on January 6, Constable N. Bauer stated he had ascertained that Jackson was in financial difficulties at the time of his death and he considered he committed suicide. Jackson altered his name by deed poll a few years ago following his acquittal after two trials on a charge of murdering his wife. Constable Bauer said Jackson was employed by Edgar V. Hudson, of Brisbane, for about three months be- fore December 20, but his services were dispensed with. He had cashed a number of cheques in Brisbane, Sandgate and Rathdowney shortly before his death. Constable Dunne, of Burleigh Heads, said the body was found under his truck with the head propped up near the exhaust pipe, which had been lowered. The petrol tank was empty and the ignition switched on. A postmortem examination showed that death was due to monoxide poisoning: Only 2d was found in the clothes and letters, which showed that Jackson was ' in financial trouble. HAD "HORROR OF DEATH." Mrs. Annie Jackson, of Mackay, said that she married Jackson on December 5, 1934. She last saw him alive at Mackay on September 8, when he left to take a position with Edgar Hudson Ltd. His health was not good. There was nothing unusual about his head being propped up, as he could not lie flat on his back, owing to an old injury to the spine. She knew in her own heart her husband would never commit suicide. He was always very optimistic and had a horror of death. He bad been working at Kyogle since just before Christmas and was going back after spending Christmas with his parents at Sand- gate. While in Brisbane he sent her, on an average, £4 a week, and also sent money from Kyogle. He was insured for £300. The inquiry was adjourned to Brisbane. |
