Death of Mr. Thomas Howe
With this issue it is our sad and sorrowful task to chronicle the death of one of the pioneers of this district in the person of Mr.Thomas Howe of Deep Creek. He arrived in Tumut about 40 years ago and was a tenant farmer on Tumut Plains for nearly two decades. By dint of hard work, honesty and increasing perseverance he reared a large family and finally settled down on the valuable and compact property at Deep Creek about 3 miles from the town of Adelong. Deceased was a shrewd, hard working, intelligent citizen, with a business capability that earned for him the cognomen of " The General" and his kindly face ; and help to the indigent and financially distressed, will certainly be widely felt, and his departure regretted by the community at large. He leaves behind him a sorrowing widow, six sons and 5 daughters to mourn their loss. " Poor Old Tom. Peace be to thine ashes. Thou didst thy part whilst here well and thy past will be long remembered. " We tender our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones in their inconsolable trouble. On Sunday last the deceased with consigned to his last resting place in the Roman Catholic portion of the old cemetery. An inquest was held at Adelong touching the death of the deceased whose lifeless body was found hanging to a tree in a paddock near his residence.
