OBITUARY
MRS. T. MALONE
The death occurred in tragic circumstances on Thursday, September 23, of Mrs. Bridget Malone, wife of Mr. Tim Malone, of Tumut Plains, at the age of 76 years. On the morning of her death, she was her usual self and was busy in the kitchen helping her daughter Lucy. The latter told her she would make a cup of tea, and while doing so, Mrs Malone walked out of the room. When Miss Malone called her mother about 10 minutes later the latter did not answer, and a subsequent search revealed no trace of her. The Tumut police were then notified and a search party organised. The search continued until the Monday, when at about 1 p.m. the bodv of Mrs. Malone was found in Shelley's Creek, about two miles downstream from the residence. An Inquest was held at the Tumut courthouse on September 30 by the Tumut coroner (Mr. R. L. Blakeney), when evidence disclosed that Mrs. Malone had been worried about some ducks which had gone to the creek, and she had made her way to the creek, which is about 60 yards from the house. The creek was in flood and the current was very swift, while there was a 12ft. drop from the top of the bank to the water. There was a rabbit burrow about 2 ft. from the edge of the bank which had earth freshly broken away, and it was the opinion of the police that Mrs Malone had placed her foot in the burrow and had fallen headlong into the stream. A verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. The late Mrs. Malone was born at Tumut Plains, where she resided all her life, and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Howe. Besides her husband there are six sons and four daughters surviving— Edward (Ryde), Mary (Newtown, Sydney), Sister Mary Carmel (Tumbarumba), Thomas (Tumut), Walter (Sydney), Leslie (Sydney), Gus (Melbourne), Nellie (Mrs. McRae, Wagga), Lucy (Tumut Plains), and John (Sydney). There are also three brothers. Charles (Tumut), John (Wagga) and Frank (Deep Creek), and three sisters, Mary (Mrs. J. McCormick, Gocup), Ada (Mrs. Carroll, Tumut) and Clare (Mrs. M. Connors Batlow) surviving. The funeral took place on September 28, moving from the Church for the Catholic portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. The Very Rev. Dean Sharkey officiated at the graveside, and the six sons were pall-bearers.
