MRS. THOMAS HAMILTON.
The death took place at Sawtell on Thursday, 20th May, of Mrs. Katherine Harper Hamilton, beloved wife of Mr. Thomas Hamilton, and a very old and respected identity of the Bellinger River. The funeral moved from the residence on Friday morning, 21st May, to the Presbyterian portion of the Fernmount cemetery, after a short service by the Rev. E. Wilkinson (Methodist minister), who officiated in the absence from the district of the Rev. W. E. Dorin, of St. Andrew's. A large gathering of district friend and relatives assembled to pay their last sad respects. The late Mrs. Hamilton was born at Neutral Bay in the year 1S62, but came with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Keough, to the Bellinger when only nine years of age, in 1871. Her parents selected land at Pine Creek, near Raleigh, and she resided there with them until she was married on August 6, 1880. In that year, with her husband, she went to reside on the South Arm of the Bellinger, and after a brief stay in that area Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton moved ed tp Gleniffer, where she and her husband pioneered land settlement. In 1906 Mr and Mrs. Hamilton and family moved to Ewingar, on the Clarence River, where Mr. Hamilton had secured a large area of land for grazing purposes. In 1925 they relinquished active work, and established a home at Sawtell in which to spend their period of retirement. Throughout life Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed the goodwill of large circles of acquaintances, and she was held in the highest esteem in every quarter. She was charitable and generous in all her thoughts and actions, an estimable wife and mother, and in the life on the land had taken her part in a remarkable way. Her neighbourly interest and friendly help to all in need, particularly in the early days, was an outstanding characteristic. She was also a noted horsewoman. In addition to her husband, the late Mrs. survived by a family of nine children, five sons and four daughters. There are also 31 grand-children and one great grandchild. The surviving sons are Messrs. Matt Hamilton (Gleniffer), Herb Hamilton(Mitchell, Queensland), Oliver (Ewingar), and Will (Ewingar). The daughters are Miss Alison Hamilton(Sawtell)., Mrs. A. G. Henderson(Valla), Mrs. L.G. Hunter (Rappville) , and Mrs, S Blackett (Tamanae Downs, Queensland). One brother and two sisters also survive. The brother is Mr. N. Keough, of Gleniffer, and the sisters are Mrs J. McFadyen (Gleniffer) and Mrs. D. McFadyen (Sawtell). One son, John T. Hamilton, predeceased his mother. To the bereaved the deepest sympathy is extended. (Nambucca and Bellinger News 4th July 1937) Contributed by Find A Grave member Lyn Hamilton (#49102595) |
