| Personal Notes: |
|
A man of great constitution and tremendous energy, Mr. Thomas Hamilton, of Sawtell, lived to celebrate his 90th, birthday a little over a month ago, but died in Coffs District Hospital on Saturday night. Throughout his life he enjoyed good health, and he retained his faculties until the last. He could converse intelligently about happenings of the past with a mind that was youthfully active.
Even in hospital a day or two before his death he joked with the nurses and seemed to be his usual happy self. He was so attentive to business affairs that before leaving his home for hospital a week ago he insisted upon writing cheques to cover his monthly accounts, not forgetting the wireless license. In many ways he was a man of talent and outstanding personality whom it was a pleasure to meet. He really made a success of life. A few weeks ago deceased developed an abscess on his right forearm, for which he went to Coffs Harbour to consult a doctor. Then he developed a bad cold, which was the cause of his entry to hospital where he Remained for two days before death intervened. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, deceased came to Australia with his parents, Matthew and Margaret Hamilton at the age of three years. As a young man he served his time in a flour mill at Adelong, but did not stick to his trade as a flour miller for very many years. The gold diggings at Lambing Flat (now Young) attracted him, and he went there to seek, with thousands of others the precious "metal”. Later he worked on the construction of the railway line from Blayney to Cowra. Next he went to New England where he heard of the rich lands of the North Coast and decided to try his luck here. He went into the timber business and worked at the first sawmill erected on the Bellinger at Repton. In 1889 he decided to select land on the South Arm, near Urunga, and had to walk to Kempsey Land Office to do so. The settlers in those days often had to walk to Kempsey to transact such business and obtain food supplies when the sailing vessels found difficulty in getting into the Bellinger. Mr. Hamilton had the distinction of having walked from the Bellinger to Kempsey in one day, over bush tracks. Later he selected land at Gleniffer, which is now worked by his eldest son, Matthew. He also acquired land at the Upper Clarence, where, he lived for some years, and retained interests there up till the time of his death. On the Bellinger he married Miss Katherine Keough, of Pine Creek, 63 years ago. She died about five years ago. It is about 20 years since he went to live at Sawtell, but although he was supposed to be retired he could not become inactive and was always busy about the home. He had been a Justice of the Peace for many years. A family of five sons and four daughters survive— the sons are Messrs. Matt. Hamilton (Gleniffer), H. Hamilton (Tenterfield), and Oliver and Will Hamilton (of Ewingar, Upper Clarence). One son, John Thomas, died in infancy. Mesdames A. G. Henderson (Valla), L. B. Hunter (Rappville), Blackett (Tanamac Downs) and Miss Hamilton (Sawtell) are the daughters. A brother (Mr. Bob Hamilton, Illabo) and a sister (Mrs. Bell, Ashfield) also survive . There are 34 grand children and 6 great-grandchildren. The funeral was at the Fernmount Cemetery on Monday, when the remains were laid to rest beside those of deceased's late wife. MR. T. HAMILTON Mr. Thomas Hamilton, aged 91 years who recently died in hospital at Coffs Harbor, came to Australia from Glasgow with his parents when he was 7 years of age. His wife died some years ago. He is survived by four daughters and five sons. Mr. Hamilton, of ‘Rose Vale' Illabo is a brother. Gravesite Details h/Katherine Harper |
