| Personal Notes: |
|
Alexander Davis was born in 1848 in Belfast and came with his parents to Australia in 1854. They came straight to Tumut and settled on a farming property on the Gilmore Creek.
They had the first vineyard in the district. In 1872 Alexander, who had then rented his parents property, commenced making wine. Eight years later he purchased "Woodlands", a property of 290 acres on the Upper Gilmore Creek. He subsequently acquired other properties from nearby settlers until he had increased his holding to 630 acres. He grew maize, wheat and bred horses, cattle and sheep. He was a very progressive settler and was actively associated with the A. and P. Society. In 1874 he married a daughter of James Campbell. They had a family of three sons and three daughters. |

In 1874 married Annie Campbell with 7children born of this union being: The sons are Frederick, Arthur W. and James Alex., and daughters Annie (Mrs. Arthur Rivers, Cootamundra), Clara (Mrs. Jas. Prowse, Burwood), and Edith (Mrs. H. Linsell, Five Dock), one, Jane (Mrs. Evans) being deceased. There are also sixteen grand-children. Excerpt From The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 19 Mar 1940 MR. ALEXANDER DAVIS The announcement in our last Friday's issue that the veteran retired farmer and grazier of Gilmore, Mr. Alexander Davis, residing with his daughter, Mrs. H. Linsell, at Five Dock, was in a low state of health prepared the legion of friends and the relatives for the news which reached Tumut on Sunday evening that, he had breathed his last at 5.15 that afternoon. He was one of the best known and most-highly-esteemed old identities of the district, and was within five weeks of attaining his 92nd birthday. Deceased was born in Belfast, Ireland, on 21st April, 1848, and in 1854 came out with his parents to New South Wales. The family arrived at Adelong, being attracted hither by the gold rush, and they first settled down at Deep Creek. The subject of this obituary was educated at the Tumut Public School. The family then bought what afterwards was termed "The Vineyard," on Gilmore Creek, and there established the first vineyard in the district. Alex. was brought up on the homestead, and in 1873 he rented the vineyard and orchard and engaged in the wine-distilling industry. In 1880 he retired from this occupation and purchased the farm, ''Woodlands," which was afterwards the birthplace of his family and where his two sons with their wives and families now reside. The original holding consisted of 290 acres, which Mr. Davis increased by selection and purchase to 630 acres, which he conducted as a grazing and agricultural proposition, breeding sheep, cattle and horses, and cultivating a portion as a wheat, oat and maize field. In 1874 he married Miss Annie Campbell, of Tumut, who died some years ago. |
