Deaths
The earth rings hollow from below,And warns us of its dead.
The grim avenger, ever remorseless, has been with us again, infant and septuagenarian this time being enfolded in his grasp. The first since our last to quit this mortal scene was a bright and promising daughter (Bessie Kirk, aged 5 years) of Mr. and Mrs. James Cooper's, of Russell-street.On Sunday last she was bright and gay ; but on Monday morning complained of pains in the glands of her throat. Dr. Mason was called in and from symptoms then apparent, treated her for tonsilitis. The treatment was not responded to, and death supervened on Tuesday evening last. The cause of death is assigned to diphtheric croup, truly a fatal malady. The subject of our obituary was, as we said before, a very promising child, and gained the distinction of ' Fairy Queen ' at the late Public School Annual Concert in aid of the prize and library fund. The funeral took place on Wednesday last and was attended by a large cortege of relatives and friends, and children belonging to the Presbyterian Sunday School following the hearse as a token of respect to their lost associate. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion of the Tumut Cemetery, Rev.H. S. Anderson officiating at the grave. Mr. H. W. Hoad was the undertaker. We sympathise with the parents and relatives in their sad and sudden bereavement.
