The Tumut and Adelong Times 10 Aug 1926
The Late Mr. J. C. Cooper. Coming on the hopeful bulletins respecting the progress of Mr. James C. Cooper, the news of his death on Wednesday last cast a gloom over the community, and profound was the sorrow expressed for the relatives of deceased in their sore affliction. The deceased had on two previous occasions been operated on for appendicitis, the first seven years ago and the second last April. After the latter, he did not make the progress towards recovery expected, not regaining his strength and ultimately lapsing into a semi-comatose state. Dr. Gallagher and Drs. Browne and Clouston were again consulted respecting his case. On the advice of Dr. Browne, it was decided that he should be taken to Sydney to consult a specialist, and with his wife, mother and brother left Adelong on July 13. Dr. Holmes A'Court had the case referred to Dr. Campbell, who advised an operation for abscess on the brain, and on July 17 at the hands of Dr. Poat he went through the ordeal, in the Molong Private Hospital, Darlinghurst. For many days he remained unconscious, the doctors giving little hopes to his relatives for recovery, But these hopes were raised when he returned to consciousness, and recognised all his friends and relatives who visited the hosptal to see him. But it was merely a flashing rally for as he was conversing with those present on Wednesday last a sudden change came over him, he became pallid, and then passed out, in the presence of his mother and wife. The remains were brought to Mt. Horeb, where Messrs. Boston Bros. took charge of the funeral arrangements, and the Rev. A. Crowther Smith (Presbyterian) officiated at the graveside in the Adelong Cemetery. Deceased was from early youth one of our most respectful young men, a fine burly type of athlete, and a true sportsman. He was associated with the Tumut Town Band from the time he left school up till he left Tumut to start business on his own account in Adelong, and before his departure was the recipient of a public send-off and tokens of appreciation of his services with the Band as well as on the football field, he being one of the first-grade players in both town and district, teams . He was a great stickler for fair play and fair dealing, and resented anything that savored of undue bias or leaning — a truly charming personality. He was also an earnest and active member of the M.U. Oddfellows, who showed their deep respect and esteem for the departed brother by marching before the hearse from the Oddfellows' Hall, Adelong, to the cemetery. On July 17, 1918 he married Miss Emma Cole, daughter of Nurse Cole, of Adelong. A widow and little daughter, 7 years, besides loving and heart-broken parents (Mr. and Mrs. Jas. R. Cooper, of Tumut), two sisters (Mrs. Ibbotson and Miss Jessie) and three brothers (Herbert, Thomas and Harry), mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father, a devoted son and an affectionate brother. His age was 32 years. A memorial service will be held in the Presybterian Church, Tumut, on Sunday evening next at 7.30. Members of the Tumut Town Band, of which deceased had been a member, will be in attendance. |
