Twin of Geoge
Ellen Augusta, known as Nell, did not marry. She was a teacher at Mt. Perry State School. She was cremated in Brisbane and her ashes buried in her mother's grave at Mt. Perry cemetery. Her address at time of her death is listed as Rosslyn Station Mt. Perry. Listed in Electoral Rolls 1903-1936 at Mt. Perry. Ellen Augusta (Nell), the twin of George G.T. Elworthy, was a pupil at Mt Perry School from Oct 1874 to Nov 1885. She then did her teacher training there and spent almost all her teaching life at the school. Nell was quite a disciplinarian and "two generations of schoolboys were bluffed by her temper". Only partly due to her initials, Nell was nicknamed Everlasting Angry Elworthy. Nevertheless she was warmly remembered by some of her ex-pupils living in Brisbane, and 90 year old Miss Kit Bennett who was still living in Mt Perry in 1989 said of her" ... she was a marvellous person and a marvellous teacher - but could she whack you! I reckon we had practically one of the best schools in Australia - or at least in Queensland. It was considered a high-class school and when the mines were booming there were 500-600 children at the school. There were teachers everywhere and although there were schoolrooms, we still had lessons in the shed. For reading and suchlike we had to go away because it was so crowded." Nell was an outstanding needlewoman. In Mt Perry Museum is a cloth which was a fund-raiser during the Great War. I was told various townspeople signed the cloth, paid a sum of money to the patriotic fund and Nell then exquisitely embroidered the signatures. Among these were A.E. Dear nee Ada Elworthy, O.M (Olivia) and E.A (Nell) Elworthy. Even though a comparatively small town, Mt Perry is credited with raising more money for the war effort than any other Queensland centre!! Nell did not marry and died on 06 April 1950, aged 81. She is buried in the Mt Perry Cemetery, next to her parents. |
