In NSW in 1858 London-born Mary Ann SUGDEN wed Alfred SIMMONDS. In 1861 she gave birth to Florence, known as Dolly, then in 1864 a son Alfred William was born in Queensland, where his father Alfred died in 1867.
On 23 March 1868 the widow, Marion as she was called, wed 31 year old George Townsend Elworthy at Port Curtis, Gladstone. The marriage certificate shows Marion was 28, a housekeeper of Calliope Diggings and a daughter of builder William Sugden and his wife Ann nee Morton. Curiously, on their marriage certificate George added 'Gregory' between his actual Christian names of George and Townsend. He said he was born in Inverness, Scotland and his father was a woollen manufacturer. His English birth certificate does not bear out these facts but no doubt at the time he had good reasons for making the revisions. |
